''Thalassa'' is a French documentary television series, broadcast for many years on Friday at 8:50 pm on France 3 and presented by Georges Pernoud. In 2017, Pernoud announced his departure from ''Thalassa''. From 2 October 2017, Fanny Agostini presented the show, once a month on a Monday at 8:55 pm, alternating with other discovery programs, including ''Faut pas rêver'', another show created by Pernoud. ''Thalassa'' is produced by France Télévisions. The show is also broadcast on TV5 Monde and is subtitled in six languages, including English. It is entirely focused on the sea (θάλασσα, ''thálassa'' in Ancient and Modern Greek) – geography, ecology, fishing, transportation, and yachting. Yachting
Yachting is the use of recreational boats and ships called ''yachts'' for racing or cruising. Yachts are distinguished from working ships mainly by their leisure purpose. "Yacht" derives from the Dutch word '' jacht'' ("hunt"). With sailboats, the activity is called sailing, and with motorboats, it is called powerboating. Racing History The history of sailing dates back to prehistoric times but the racing of sailing boats is believed to have started in the Netherlands some time in the 17th century. Soon, in England, custom-built racing "yachts" began to emerge. In 1851, the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes challenged the American yacht ''America''. The race took place in the Solent. Thalassa (; grc-gre, Θάλασσα, Thálassa, sea; Attic Greek: , ''Thálatta'') was the general word for 'sea' and for its divine female personification in Greek mythology. The word may have been of Pre-Greek origin. Mythology According to a scholion on Apollonius of Rhodes, the fifth-century BC poet Ion of Chios had Thalassa as the mother of Aegaeon (Briareus, one of the Hecatoncheires). ''Des chiffres et des lettres'' (, "numbers and letters") is a French television programme. It was created by Armand Jammot and tests the numeracy skills and vocabulary of two contestants. It is one of the longest-running game shows in the world, and the inspiration for ''Countdown'' on Britain's Channel 4. The game debuted in 1965 as ''Le mot le plus long'' using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. It is currently transmitted on France 3 after 39 years first on Antenne 2 and then France 2. It has been hosted since 1992 by Laurent Romejko, Arielle Boulin-Prat, and Bertrand Renard. The former two check words proposed by the contestants and Renard provides solutions to the number problems the contestants fail to solve.
