Thai Highway Network
The Thai highway network follows the Right- and left-hand traffic, left-hand traffic rule of the road. The network is the twin responsibility of the Department of Highways (Thailand), Department of Highways (DOH, th, กรมทางหลวง, ''Krom Thang Luang''), and the Department of Rural Roads (DORR, , ''Krom Thang Luang Chonnabot''), under the oversight of the Transportation ministry of Thailand. Public highways (, ''thang luang'') are also called public roads (, ''thanon luang''), especially when part of urban streets. The network spans over 70,000 kilometers across all regions of Thailand. Most are single carriageways. Dual carriageways have frequent u-turn lanes and intersections slowing down traffic. Coupled with the increase in the number of vehicles and the demand for a limited-access motorway, the Thai Government issued a Cabinet resolution in 1997 detailing the motorway construction master plan. Southern Thailand
Southern Thailand, Southern Siam or Tambralinga is a southernmost cultural region of Thailand, separated from Central Thailand region by the Kra Isthmus. Geography Southern Thailand is on the Malay Peninsula, with an area of around , bounded to the north by Kra Isthmus, the narrowest part of the peninsula. The western part has highly steep coasts, while on the east side river plains dominate. The largest river of the south is the Tapi in Surat Thani, which together with the Phum Duang in Surat Thani drains more than , more than 10 percent of the total area of southern Thailand. Mittraphap Road
Mittraphap Road (, , ) or Highway 2 (, ) is one of the four primary highways in Thailand, along with Phahonyothin Road (Highway 1), Sukhumvit Road (Highway 3), and Phetkasem Road (Highway 4). It runs from Saraburi to Nong Khai. The road was originally built from Khorat to Nong Khai by the United States in 1955–1957 at a cost of US$20 million to supply its northeastern military bases.
