Texas State Police
The Texas State Police (TSP) was created following the Civil War by order of Texas Governor Edmund J. Davis. The TSP worked primarily against racially based crimes in Texas, and included black police officers. It was replaced by a renewed Texas Rangers force in 1873. History The Texas State Police was formed during the administration of Governor Davis on July 22, 1870, to combat crime during the Reconstruction Era of the United States. Davis also created the State Guard of Texas, and the Texas Reserve Militia, which were forerunners of the Texas National Guard. Among Texas State Police members were Captain Jack Helm of DeWitt County, Texas—later murdered by John Wesley Hardin and Jim Taylor during the Sutton–Taylor feud. Ann Patton Malone
Ann Patton Malone (''fl.'' 1969–2018) is a historian and educator focused on the Reconstruction Era and the Louisiana plantation systems. Also known as Ann Patton Baenziger Malone, she married Roger Baenziger in the 1950s. Career Malone attended Southwest Texas State University, where her master's thesis was ''Bold Beginnings: The Radical Program in Texas, 1870-1873'' (1970). Malone studied history of the Reconstruction era for five years. She began teaching American History at Southwest Texas State University around 1967. By 1969, she had written several scholarly articles about the Reconstruction era. She wrote ''The Texas State Police during Reconstruction: A Reexamination'' (April 1969) about the positive contributions that the state police made to combat violence during the reconstruction in Texas (1865–1899). The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, or TABC (formerly the Texas Liquor Control Board), is a Texas public agency responsible for regulating, inspecting, and taxing the production, sale, and use of alcoholic beverages within the state. Horrell Brothers
The Horrell brothers, sometimes referred to as the lawless Horrell boys (''circa'' 1873–1878), were five brothers from the Horrell family of Lampasas County, Texas, who were outlaws of the Old West, and who committed numerous murders over a five-year period before four of the brothers were killed in different incidents. The brothers are probably best known for the Horrell-Higgins feud, although it resulted in relatively few deaths compared to other feuds. However, starting in 1873, the brothers went on an ethnically motivated killing spree during which they killed a Hispanic lawman and a white lawman in New Mexico, killed 11 other Hispanic men, and wounded one Hispanic woman.
