Texas State Highway Spur 557
Spur 557 is a spur route in the city of Terrell in the U.S. state of Texas. Spur 557 is a freeway connector between I-20 and US 80. It is signed as "Spur 557 To I-20" eastbound or "Spur 557 To US 80" westbound. Spur 557 is the original routing of I-20 prior to I-20 being rerouted to the south. The route traverses a largely undeveloped area in Kaufman County, Texas between Forney, Texas and Terrell, Texas and serves to distribute eastbound traffic onto Interstate 20 and westbound traffic onto the US 80 freeway leading into the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. A spur route is a short road forming a branch from a longer, more important road such as a freeway, Interstate Highway, or motorway. A bypass or beltway should not be considered a true spur route as it typically reconnects with another or the same major road. A stands for "Alternate Route", and usually links a highway to a town's central core or main attraction, while B stands for "Business Route" or "Bypass", but are used when a main highway is routed around a town and away from its former alignment. Terrell, Texas
Terrell is a city in Kaufman County, Texas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 17,465. Terrell is located about east of Dallas. History Terrell developed as a railroad town, beginning in 1873 with construction here of the Texas and Pacific Railroad line. The town was named for Robert A. Terrell, a pioneer European-American settler whose farm lay on its western edge. He built an octagonal house on his property, called a "Round House", to provide better defense against attacks by Native Americans. They had occupied this territory for thousands of years. His house was later fitted with the first glass windows in the county. The community was incorporated in 1875. The first automobile appeared in 1899. Interstate 20 in Texas (I-20) is a major east–west Interstate Highway in the Southern United States, running east from a junction with I-10 east of Kent, Texas, through the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex to the border with Louisiana near Waskom, Texas. The original distance of I-20 was from I-10 to the Louisiana border, reduced to the current distance of with the rerouting of I-20 in the 1980s and 1990s. Kaufman County is a county in the northeast area of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 145,310. Its county seat is Kaufman. Both the county, established in 1848, and the city were named for David S. Kaufman, a U.S. Representative and diplomat from Texas. Route description FM 148 begins at an intersection with State Highway 274 near Kemp just west of Cedar Creek Reservoir. The highway runs in a west–east direction from SH 274 to County Road 3094, making a 90 degree angle to the north towards Grays Prairie.
