Texas State Highway 86
State Highway 86 (SH 86) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Texas that runs from Texico to Estelline. This route was designated on August 21, 1923 as the renumbered SH 5A. On September 17, 1923, the section from Estelline to Turkey was cancelled, as SH 18 extended northeast from Turkey to Memphis. By 1929, it was shortened to Bovina, as it was constructed on that route, instead. It has travelled its present course since then, except for the addition of the northern portion of SH 18 between Turkey and Estelline on December 22, 1936. US 60
U.S. Route 60 is a major east–west United States highway, traveling from southwestern Arizona to the Atlantic Ocean coast in Virginia. The highway's eastern terminus is in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where it is known as Pacific Avenue, in the city's Oceanfront resort district at the intersection of 5th Street and Winston-Salem Avenue. Its original western terminus was in Springfield, Missouri; it was then extended to Los Angeles, California, but in 1964, it was truncated to end southwest of Brenda, Arizona, at an interchange with Interstate 10 (I-10) after the US 60 highway designation was removed from California. I-10 replaced US 60 from Beaumont, California, to Arizona, and California State Route 60 (SR 60) replaced US 60 from Los Angeles to Beaumont. State Highway 5 (Texas)
State Highway 5 (SH 5) runs along the old route of U.S. Highway 75 at Howe into the city of Allen. SH 5 parallels US 75 along its length and runs alongside the former Houston and Texas Central rail line. SH 5 was created in 1959 when the new route of US 75 was established to the west. Historically, SH 5 extended into and through Plano and Richardson. Route history The current version of SH 5 was established on April 29, 1959 initially as a replacement for the former routing of U.S. Highway 75 from Richardson north to McKinney when US 75 was rebuilt further to the west. The route was extended north to Howe on October 27, 1967 to replace another portion of US 75 that had been upgraded on a new route just to the west. Midway Drive-In (Texas)
The Midway Drive-In Theater was built in 1955 between Turkey and Quitaque, Texas, on Highway 86 when over 300 drive-ins were operating in Texas. Background This theatre was like the other Midway drive-ins that were built midway between two towns or cities. It closed down in the 1980s during a time that few drive-ins were surviving across America. Then, it was purchased, restored, and reopened to play current movies by a local citizen in 2000. The Midway was noted in episode 818 of ''Texas Country Reporter'' that aired May 3, 2003. The drive-in ran for over five years until it closed again. The property was rented, and opened intermittently until 2009, when it was purchased by another family, who started a second restoration and reopened the theater. It has been listed as one of 545 known permanently constructed and commercially operated drive-ins in the world that still operated in 2011. State Highway 18 (SH 18) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Texas maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) that runs from Fort Stockton in western Texas to the Texas-New Mexico state line between Kermit and Jal, New Mexico. This route was designated in 1958 over the northern half of what was previously SH 82. Route description SH 18 begins at Fort Stockton at an intersection with Business Interstate 10 and US 285. Bovina, Texas
Bovina is a city in Parmer County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. History Originally, the community was the Hay Hook Line Camp of the XIT Ranch, and the ranch headquarters was one of the county's earliest buildings. When the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway was built through the ranch in 1898, a switch was placed at the site to be used by cowboys to unload cottonseed shipped in as feed. Some of this feed was invariably spilled along the tracks, causing XIT cattle to gather at the unfenced right-of-way. Often, they lay down, compelling railroad workers to get off their trains and prod them off the tracks. As a result, the site was labeled Bull Town, a name replaced by the more elegant Bovina when the post office was established on January 31, 1899. Geography Bovina is located at .
