Texas State Highway 349
State Highway 349 (SH 349) is a state highway in the western part of Texas, United States. History The original formation of the highway on August 3, 1943 included only the section from Rankin to Midland, replacing FM 9. On April 30, 1947, FM 306 and FM 177 were redesignated to form the segment of SH 349 from Midland to near Lamesa. The section from Sheffield to Rankin was added on October 24, 1956 by redesignating part of SH 51. The part of SH 349 south of Sheffield was Farm to Market Road 1217, which was designated on July 14, 1949 from Dryden northward . FM 1217 was extended to the northeast on May 23, 1951, on December 18, 1951, on December 17, 1952, and on April 24, 1954. The designation was extended on September 29, 1954 to the end of FM 1749, which was cancelled and combined with FM 1217, adding and bringing its southern terminus to Sheffield. Dryden, Texas
Dryden is an unincorporated community in south central Terrell County, Texas, United States. History The community was founded in 1882 and named for Eugene E. Dryden, the chief engineer of the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway, which was building its tracks through Terrell County and established a section house at Dryden. Over the next several decades Dryden became a small center for ranching-based businesses. The headquarters for the Pecos Land and Cattle Company was established in Dryden in 1884. The company drilled a well that supplied the area with water. By 1912, a hotel, the Dryden Hotel, had been established, along with a combined schoolhouse, community center, and church. Tom Craddick
Thomas Russell Craddick (born September 19, 1943) is a Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives representing the 82nd district. Craddick was Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives from January 2003 to January 2009. He was the first Republican to have served as Speaker since Reconstruction. Craddick was first elected in 1968 at the age of twenty-five and, as of 2019, is now the longest serving legislator in the history of the Texas House of Representatives and the longest serving incumbent state legislator in the United States. State Highway 158 (SH 158) is a state highway running from near Goldsmith, Texas eastward to Ballinger, Texas. Route description SH 158 begins at an intersection with State Highway 302/Farm to Market Road 181 northwest of Odessa in unincorporated Ector County. The highway runs in a northeast–southwest direction until Philips Plant Road, turning into a more east–west direction. SH 158 enters the town of Goldsmith, intersecting with Farm to Market Road 866. Fort Lancaster
Fort Lancaster is a former United States Army installation located near Sheffield, Texas. The fort was established in 1855 on the San Antonio–El Paso Road to protect migrants moving toward California through Texas. The US Army occupied Fort Lancaster until Texas seceded from the United States in March 1861 and were replaced at the fort by forces loyal to the Confederate States of America. The Confederate Army held the fort from November 1861 until April 1862, when it was again abandoned and then burned. The 82-acre site, now operated by the Texas Historical Commission as Fort Lancaster State Historic Site, contains the ruins of 29 buildings that made up the fort and a visitor center with a museum.
