Texas State Highway 294
State Highway 294 (SH 294) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Texas that runs from U.S. Highway 79 and U.S. Highway 84 (US 79/US 84) east to Alto in East Texas. The route was designated on September 26, 1939 along its current route, replacing part of State Highway 7 (SH 7). Route description SH 294 begins at an intersection with US 79/ US 84 in far southwestern Anderson County and proceeds to the east through agricultural and forested areas. The route intersects US 287/ SH 19 in the town of Elkhart, and is concurrent with those two routes to the southeast towards Crockett. Just southeast of town, SH 294 splits from US 287/SH 19 and continues to the east through the southern portion of Anderson County. The route then crosses the Neches River into Cherokee County. Oakwood is a town in Leon and Freestone counties in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 389 at the 2020 census. It was founded in 1872 as a stop on the International Railroad. Geography Oakwood is located in northeastern Leon County at (31.584816, –95.850666). USGS topographic maps show the northern town boundary following the Leon/Freestone County line, but maps by the U.S. Census show the town extending slightly north into Freestone County. U.S. Route 79 runs through the town as Broad Street, leading northeast to Palestine and southwest to Buffalo. Alto is a town in Cherokee County, Texas, United States. With a population of 1,027 at the 2020 U.S. census, Alto is the closest municipality to the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site, an archaeological site dating back to 800 CE, featuring a prehistoric village and ceremonial center. History An early settler in the region was Martin Lacy, who built Lacy's Fort just to the west to the current site of Alto in around 1838. East Texas
East Texas is a broadly defined cultural, geographic, and ecological region in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas that comprises most of 41 counties. State Highway 7 (Texas)
State Highway 7 (SH 7) is an east–west state highway that runs from Interstate 35 at Eddy to U.S. Highway 84 about west of the Texas-Louisiana state line. Between Crockett and Nacogdoches, SH 7 passes through the Davy Crockett National Forest. Commissioned on April 4, 1917, SH 7 is one of the original state highways established in Texas, and has been re-routed several times since its original conception. In earlier years, SH 7 mostly followed present day U.S. Highway 84, U.S. Highway 67, U.S. Highway 70 among other highways between northwest Texas and the Louisiana border. By 1939, most of the mileage belonging to SH 7 was transferred to the U.S. Highway System, leaving the highway extant only within eastern Texas. State Highway 19 (SH 19) is a state highway in Texas runs from Huntsville to Paris in east Texas. Route description SH 19 begins at an interchange with Interstate 45 in southeast Huntsville. The highway runs through the eastern edge of the town as an expressway running close to the Sam Houston National Forest. Concurrency (road)
A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Other terminology for a concurrency includes overlap, coincidence, duplex (two concurrent routes), triplex (three concurrent routes), multiplex (any number of concurrent routes), dual routing or triple routing. Neches River
The Neches River () begins in Van Zandt County west of Rhine Lake and flows for through the piney woods of east Texas, defining the boundaries of 14 counties on its way to its mouth on Sabine Lake near the Rainbow Bridge. Two major reservoirs, Lake Palestine and B. A. Steinhagen Reservoir are located on the Neches.
