Texas State Highway 194
State Highway 194 (SH 194) is a state highway that travels from near Dimmitt southeast to Plainview in the Texas Panhandle. History SH 194 was designated on its current route on February 9, 1933. On September 26, 1939, the designation was extended from Plainview southeast through Petersburg, then southwest through Slaton to Tahoka, replacing SH 280. On October 22, 1940, the section of SH 194 from 3.6 miles north of the Hale-Lubbock County Line to Slaton was cancelled. On November 22, 1940, the section from Plainview to 3.6 miles north of the Hale-Lubbock County Line was cancelled. On March 6, 1941, the section of SH 194 from Slaton to Tahoka was cancelled. The current route parallels the Burlington Northern railway along its entire route, except for the final half mile in Plainview. Dimmitt ( ) is a city and county seat in Castro County, Texas, United States. Its population was 4,393 at the 2010 census. History Dimmitt is located on the old Ozark Trail, a road system from St. Louis, Missouri, to El Paso, Texas. The Ozark Trail is marked at the courthouse. In 1942, a meteorite was discovered in Castro County and named after the town of Dimmitt. It is one of 311 approved meteorites from Texas. Geography Dimmitt is located slightly west of the center of Castro County at (34.549052, –102.315355). Petersburg, TX
Petersburg is a city in Hale County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 1,202. History Petersburg was founded in 1891 as a post office in southeast Hale County. It was named for Zack Peters and his wife, Margaret, who was the first postmistress. In 1902, Ed M. White established a store at the site of the present community, and moved the post office southwest into Hale County. Although the townsite was platted in 1909, its population remained below 100 until the Fort Worth and Denver Railway was built through town in 1928. Wheat and grain sorghum (milo) were the main crops in the area until cotton was first planted in 1905. The town was incorporated with a population of 200 in 1927. Petersburg grew as a farming and rail-shipment center, and by 1949, it had 22 businesses and 500 people. Texas State Highway 280
Below is a list and summary of some of the deleted state highways (i.e., those with no current routing) as outlined by the Texas Department of Transportation designation files, indicated by having zero current mileage. SH 1 State Highway 1 ran from El Paso through Dallas to Texarkana. It was the first highway designated in 1917. In 1926, the United States Highway System was designated, with US 80 colocated from El Paso to Dallas and US 67 from Dallas to Texarkana. On September 26, 1939, the dual designations were removed, leaving SH 1 only on a small stretch west of Dallas. This section was redesignated as State Loop 260 on August 20, 1952. Since that time, the number "may only be assigned by the Executive Director of the Texas Department of Transportation or the Transportation Commission."
