State Highway 127 (SH 127) is a state highway in Uvalde County in the U.S. state of Texas that connects Sabinal and Concan in south Texas. Route description SH 127 begins in Sabinal at an intersection with US 90 and RM 187. The highway travels north through Sabinal along Center Street, concurrent with RM 187, before separating from that route and turning toward the northwest. After crossing the Sabinal River, the highway travels through unincorporated Uvalde County, intersecting FM 30, FM 1049, and RM 2690. The route crosses the Frio River at Concan before ending at a junction with US 83. History The original SH 127 was designated on October 10, 1927 as a proposed route from Cotulla eastward through Tilden to Oakville. It was officially numbered SH 127 on November 15, 1927. Sabinal is a city in Uvalde County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,695 at the 2010 census. Geography Sabinal is located at (29.320678, –99.468887). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km), all of it land. Climate The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Sabinal has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. Texas State Highway 202
State Highway 202 (SH 202) is a Texas state highway between Beeville and Refugio. The route was designated on January 9, 1934 from George West to Beeville as a restoration of the easternmost portion of the old SH 127 (which was reused on another road in 1932). On November 19, 1935, it was extended west to Fowlerton. On December 21, 1936, it was extended east to Refugio. By 1938, SH 202 was extended west to Cotulla (restoring more of the old SH 127) and east to Refugio. On September 26, 1939, the section of SH 202 west of George West was transferred to SH 72. On October 30, 1939, before signage was changed, SH 202 was extended to Laredo, replacing SH 257 (note that SH 202 east of George West was to be transferred to SH 257 on September 26, 1939). State Highway 2 (SH 2) was a Texas state highway. SH 2 was one of the original twenty-five state highways proposed on April 4, 1917, overlaid on top of the Meridian Highway and Gulf Division Highway. Oakville is an unincorporated community in northeastern Live Oak County, Texas, United States. It lies along Interstate 37 northeast of the city of George West, the county seat of Live Oak County. Tilden is a Census-designated place (CDP) and county seat of McMullen County, Texas, United States. Tilden lies at the intersection of State Highways 16 and 72 in the north central part of the county. It is located roughly an hour south of San Antonio. History During the Civil War, a Home Guard post named Camp Rio Frio was built to protect the community from Apaches and bandits. After the war, the community was called Dog Town and was reputed to be a lawless and bandit-filled place. The first establishment was the Franklin Ranch in 1868, built by Ralph S. Franklin. Cotulla, Texas
Cotulla ( ) is a city in and the county seat of La Salle County, Texas, United States. Its population was 3,718 as of the 2020 census. History Immigrant Joseph Cotulla, who was reared in Silesia, then a part of Prussia, migrated to the United States in the 1850s. He joined the Union Army in Brownsville, Texas. He lived in Atascosa County, but arrived in La Salle County in 1868 to establish what became a large ranching operation. After learning that the International-Great Northern Railroad intended to lay tracks in La Salle County, he worked to establish the town that bears his name. Frio River
The Frio River is a river in the U.S. state of Texas. The word ''frío'' is Spanish for ''cold'', a clear reference to the spring-fed coolness of the river. Geography The Frio River has three primary tributaries; the East, West, and Dry Frio Rivers. The West Frio River rises from springs in northeastern Real County and joins with the East Frio River near the town of Leakey; the Dry Frio River joins northeast of Uvalde. The river flows generally southeast for 200 miles until it empties into the Nueces River south of the town of Three Rivers. Concan, Texas
Concan is a small unincorporated community in Uvalde County. It sits along the Frio River close to Garner State Park and is a popular destination for summer vacationers. It is known for excellent birdwatching in the spring. A Roy Bechtol-designed 18-hole golf course called Concan Country Club or the Golf Club at Concan is open to the public. The area is dominated by large cattle, sheep and goat ranches some of which date back to when German emigrants settled this area. Several outfitters in the area haul swimmers and tubers up the Frio River to designated drop-off points, then pick them up downstream.
