Texas
Texas (, ; Spanish: ''Texas'', ''Tejas'') is a state in the South Central region of the United States. At 268,596 square miles (695,662 km2), and with more than 29.1 million residents in 2020, it is the second-largest U.S. state by both area (after Alaska) and population (after California). 11th Texas Infantry Regiment
The 11th Texas Infantry Regiment was a unit of volunteers recruited in Texas that fought in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The regiment organized in the winter of 1861–1862 and always served west of the Mississippi River in the Trans-Mississippi Department. The unit was assigned to the 2nd Brigade of the Texas infantry division known as Walker's Greyhounds. The regiment fought at Milliken's Bend and Bayou Bourbeux in 1863 and Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, and Jenkins' Ferry in 1864. The regiment disbanded in mid-May 1865, but its formal surrender date was 26 May 1865. 22nd Texas Infantry Regiment
The 22nd Texas Infantry Regiment was a unit of volunteers recruited in Texas that fought in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. In August 1862, the regiment was enrolled in Confederate service, and for its entire career served west of the Mississippi River in the region known as the Trans-Mississippi Department. The unit was assigned to the 1st Brigade of the Texas infantry division known as Walker's Greyhounds. In 1863, the regiment played a secondary role at Milliken's Bend. Within the month of April 1864, the regiment fought in three major battles at Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, and Jenkins' Ferry. Though the formal surrender occurred on 26 May 1865, the soldiers disbanded to their homes before that date. 21st Texas Infantry Regiment
The 21st Texas Infantry Regiment was a unit of volunteers recruited in Texas that fought in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was formed in spring 1864 by consolidating William Henry Griffin's 21st Texas Infantry Battalion and Ashley W. Spaight's 11th Texas Cavalry Battalion. Spaight became colonel and Griffin became lieutenant colonel. Spaight's 11th Battalion existed as early as September 1862 with a strength of 400 men. In the 21st Regiment's only notable action, it ambushed and captured two Union gunboats in the Battle of Calcasieu Pass on 24 April 1864. The unit's duties were mainly guarding the Texas Gulf Coast. It moved to Marshall, Texas, in the winter of 1864–1865, then marched to Shreveport, Louisiana. In April 1865, the regiment returned to Texas before disbanding in May. 20th Texas Infantry Regiment
The 20th Texas Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Service The 20th Texas Infantry was composed mainly of middle-aged men and commanded by Colonel Henry M. Elmore. It was part of the District of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, also known as the Third Corps under General John B. Magruder. Their main purpose was to guard the Sabine River and to protect the city of Galveston, Texas. They saw little action until the Battle of Galveston in January 1863, in which they served with distinction, for which their action were commended by Confederate President Jefferson Davis. On May 26, 1865, at New Orleans, the 20th Texas Infantry was surrendered to Federal forces as part of General Edmund Kirby Smith's Confederate Trans-Mississippi Department, with Lt. Gen. Simon B. 17th Texas Infantry Regiment
The 17th Texas Infantry Regiment was a unit of volunteers recruited in Texas that fought in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The regiment organized in March 1862 with West Point graduate Robert T. P. Allen as it first colonel. It spent its entire existence west of the Mississippi River in the Trans-Mississippi Department. After marching to Arkansas in August 1862, the regiment spent the winter at Camp Nelson where a large number of men died from disease. The 16th Texas Infantry Regiment was a unit of volunteers recruited in Texas that fought in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. George Flournoy, the former Attorney General of the state of Texas, organized the regiment at Camp Groce in March 1862. Its entire career was spent west of the Mississippi River in the Trans-Mississippi Department. It marched to Arkansas where it camped during the winter of 1862–1863.
