''Texas John Slaughter'' (formally titled: ''Tales of Texas John Slaughter'') is a western television series which aired seventeen episodes between October 31, 1958 and April 23, 1961, as part of ''The Wonderful World of Disney'', starring Tom Tryon in the title role. The character was based upon an actual historical figure, Texas Ranger John Horton Slaughter. Tryon memorably wore an enormous white cowboy hat with the brim pinned up in the front as part of his wardrobe for the series. Narration is provided by Paul Frees. ''Texas'' is a 1941 American Western film directed by George Marshall and starring William Holden, Glenn Ford and Claire Trevor. ''Texas'' was an early picture for both Holden (his seventh credited performance) and Ford (his ninth). The film was designed by Columbia as a follow-up, though not a sequel, to the previous year's ''Arizona'', which also starred Holden. Plot Two Confederate veterans, broke and homeless, are making their way to Texas to start fresh. After comedic adventures getting into and out of trouble, just trying to make enough money to get to Texas, they witness a stagecoach robbery and manage to hold up the outlaws and take back the cash. Characters include real and fictional characters spanning hundreds of years, such as explorers, Spanish colonists, American immigrants, German Texan settlers, ranchers, oil men, aristocrats, Chicanos, and others, all based on extensive historical research. Background Michener did extensive research on the novel in Texas, receiving much support from the state government. Governor Bill Clements offered him access to numerous state archives and research staff at the University of Texas at Austin. Michener rented 3506 Mt. Bonnell Road for $1 per year to write the manuscript. At 1,076 pages, it was the longest Michener novel published by Random House.
