Tetuzi Akiyama
Tetuzi Akiyama (Akiyama Tetsuji) (born 13 April 1964) is a Japanese guitarist, violinist, and instrument-maker. Akiyama formed the improvisation group Madhar in 1987, and the classical ensemble Hikyo String Quintet in 1994 (which also included Taku Sugimoto on cello). In 1995, Akiyama and Sugimoto formed a guitar duo, and played at venues in New York City, Chicago, and Detroit. During this time, Akiyama was also a member of Keiji Haino's Nijiumu outfit. Akiyama also formed Sutekina Tea Time (a duo with Takashi Matsuoka) and Mongoose (a trio with Taku Sugimoto and Utah Kawasaki). In 1998 Akiyama began organising a monthly concert series, The Improvisation Meeting, with Toshimaru Nakamura. Free Jazz
Free jazz is an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, tones, and chord changes. Musicians during this period believed that the bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz that had been played before them was too limiting. They became preoccupied with creating something new and exploring new directions. The term "free jazz" has often been combined with or substituted for the term "avant-garde jazz". Europeans tend to favor the term "free improvisation". Others have used "modern jazz", "creative music", and "art music". The ambiguity of free jazz presents problems of definition. Paul Hood (musician)
Paul Hood D.D. (died 2 August 1668) was an English academic administrator at the University of Oxford. Hood was elected Rector (head) of Lincoln College, Oxford in 1621, a post he held until 1668. The Rector's Lodgings at Lincoln College were enlarged for Hood since he was the first Rector at the college to marry. Paul Hood was a Puritan sympathiser. After the surrender of Oxford on 24 June 1646 during the English Civil War, Oxford University underwent a parliamentary visitation, starting from 15 May 1647. The visitation was resisted by many at Oxford, but not by Hood. He was the only Head of a College at Oxford to submit to the visitors when members of Convocation were asked to do so on 7 April 1648. Philip Dadson
Philip Dadson (born 1946 in Napier, New Zealand) is a New Zealand musician and artist, who was in the foundation group for the Scratch Orchestra and founder of From Scratch. He lectured at the Elam School of Fine Arts, part of the University of Auckland from 1977, leaving in 2001 to take up full-time art practice. He co-authored the 2007 book ''Slap Tubes and other Plosive Aerophones'' with fellow instrument inventor Bart Hopkin, whose 1998 CD/book ''Gravikords, Whirlies & Pyrophones'' had also featured Dadson's group From Scratch. In 2010 the Wellington Sculpture Trust commissioned ''Akau Tangi'', a wind powered sculpture installed on Cobham Drive, Wellington. Alan Licht (born June 6, 1968) is an American guitarist and composer, whose work combines elements of pop, noise, free jazz and minimalism. He is also a writer and journalist. Biography Licht was born in New Jersey in 1968. His earliest musical influences, in the 1970s, were mainstream rock bands like the Bee Gees and Wings—he remarks in an interview with ''Paris Transatlantic'' magazine that 'What made me want to play guitar was that painting of Wings in concert in the gatefold of ''Wings Over America''. Oren Ambarchi (born 1969) is an Australian musician. He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays mainly electric guitar and percussion. Biography Oren Ambarchi was born in Sydney to an Iraqi Jewish family. Ambarchi has been performing live since 1986. In the late 1980s he played free jazz in Sydney, originally as a drummer.
