"Test for Echo" is the title track and first single from Canadian rock band Rush's 16th studio album released in 1996. The song's lyrics were written by Neil Peart and Pye Dubois with music written by Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson. The song reached No. 1 on the ''Billboard'' Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. It was the band's fourth consecutive album to yield a chart-topper on this chart, along with "Show Don't Tell" from '' Presto'', "Dreamline" from ''Roll the Bones'', and "Stick It Out" from ''Counterparts''. The song also peaked at #6 on the Canadian Singles Chart, which is the band's highest position on that chart since New World Man peaked at #1 in 1982. Rush (band)
Rush was a Canadian rock band formed in 1968 in Toronto, that was comprised primarily of Geddy Lee (bass, vocals), Alex Lifeson (guitar), and Neil Peart (drums, percussion, lyricist). The band formed in Toronto in 1968 by Lifeson, drummer John Rutsey, and bass guitarist/vocalist Jeff Jones, who was immediately replaced by Lee. After Lee joined, the band went through several lineup configurations before arriving at its classic power trio lineup with the addition of Peart in July 1974, who replaced Rutsey four months after the release of their 1974 self-titled debut album; this lineup remained intact for the remainder of the band's career. Rush achieved commercial success in the 1970s with '' Fly by Night'' (1975), '' 2112'' (1976), ''A Farewell to Kings'' (1977) and '' Hemispheres'' (1978). ''Roll the Bones'' is the fourteenth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released September 3, 1991 on Anthem Records. The band began working on ''Roll the Bones'' after a brief creative hiatus following the tour promoting their previous release, '' Presto''. ''Roll the Bones'' was a return to commercial success for the band, reaching No. 3 in the United States, No. 10 in the UK, and No. 11 in Canada. The album won a Juno Award for Best Album Design at the 1992 awards. In August 2001, the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for selling one million copies in the US. It was remastered in 2004 and again in 2013 as part of '' The Studio Albums 1989–2007'' box set. When introduced by ''Billboard'' in March 1981, the Mainstream Rock chart was entitled Top Tracks and designed to measure the airplay of songs being played on album-oriented rock radio stations. The chart has undergone several name changes over the years, first to Top Rock Tracks in September 1984 and then to Album Rock Tracks in April 1986. The chart would not be called "mainstream" until 1996. The term "tracks" was used to distinguish itself from singles charts (such as the ''Billboard'' Hot 100) as songs played on rock radio were not always released as singles. When an established rock artist released a new album, for example, it was not uncommon for multiple songs from the album to become popular simultaneously. The song that had the longest run atop the chart during the 1980s was "Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones at 13 weeks from the beginning of September through the first week of December in 1981. The Canadian Singles Chart was a chart compiled by the American-based music sales tracking company, Nielsen SoundScan, which began publication in November 1996. It was published every Wednesday and also published on Thursday by '' Jam!''/Canoe. It was superseded by the '' Billboard''-published Canadian Hot 100 in 2007. History In the 1960s, the Canadian music industry was disparate and regionally focused, and English-speaking Canadian artists were often overlooked in favour of American acts. To encourage a more national focus and ensure that domestic artists were promoted across Canada, the Maple Leaf System (MLS) was set up in 1969. The MLS produced its own national singles chart, which '' Billboard'' magazine reproduced as Canada's entry in its weekly Hits of the World section.
