Terry Patchett
Terry Patchett (11 July 1940 – 11 October 1996) was a politician in the United Kingdom. Patchett served as Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament for Barnsley East (UK Parliament constituency), Barnsley East from 1983 until his death, and was a member of the Labour Party (UK), Labour Party. Early life Patchett was born in Darfield, South Yorkshire on 11 July 1940. He studied politics and economics at the University of Sheffield. Career Before becoming an MP, Patchett worked as a miner for seventeen years. A member of the National Union of Mineworkers (Great Britain), National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), he became the branch delegate for Houghton Main in 1966, and from 1977 he was a member of the union's Yorkshire executive. From 1969 to 1973 he was also on Wombwell District Council. Barnsley East (UK Parliament Constituency)
Barnsley East is a constituency in South Yorkshire, represented since 2017 by Stephanie Peacock of the Labour Party. Constituency profile The seat covers the south-east suburbs of Barnsley and former coal mining areas such as Hoyland, Darfield and Wombwell. Its residents are poorer than the UK average. History The seat was created as Barnsley East in 1983 and abolished to create Barnsley East and Mexborough in 1997. It was recreated as Barnsley East at the 2010 general election. Eight candidates competed for the seat in the 2010 general election; however, the largest two opposition parties failed to gain more than 18.2% each and the winning candidate Michael Dugher managed to obtain 47% of all votes despite the presence of a candidate from the Socialist Labour Party. The Scott Report (the ''Report of the Inquiry into the Export of Defence Equipment and Dual-Use Goods to Iraq and Related Prosecutions'') was a judicial inquiry commissioned in 1992 after reports surfaced of previously restricted arms sales to Iraq in the 1980s by British companies. The report was conducted by Sir Richard Scott, then a Lord Justice of Appeal. It was published in 1996. Much of the report was classified as secret. Background In the late 1980s, Matrix Churchill, a British (Coventry) aerospace quality machine tools manufacturer that had been bought by the Iraqi government, was exporting machines used in weapons manufacture to Iraq. According to the International Atomic Energy Authority, the products later found in Iraq were among the highest quality of their kind in the world. Barnburgh Main Colliery
Barnburgh Main Colliery was a coal mine situated on the outskirts of the village of Barnburgh, about two miles north of Mexborough in the Dearne Valley, South Yorkshire, England. The sinking of the colliery was commenced in 1911 by the Manvers Main Colliery Company of Wath-upon-Dearne. The sinking reached the Barnsley seam in 1914 and later the Parkgate seam was reached. The colliery was adjacent to the Dearne Valley Railway to which it was connected but in 1924 a private line was constructed between Barnburgh and the Manvers complex. On 24 April 1942, the mine suffered a collapse in the Park Gate coal seam. Miners reported that the floor rose up towards the ceiling. Geologists put forward the theory that the downward pressure caused the floor to be forced upwards. 18 miners were sealed in and despite frantic rescue efforts, four men died. The Petroleum Royalties (Relief) Act 1983 (c. 59) is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom which exempted certain petroleum licence holders of new offshore oil and gas fields from the payment of petroleum royalties or the delivery of petroleum. Jeffrey Ennis (born 13 November 1952) is a British Labour Party politician, who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Barnsley East and Mexborough from 1996 to 2010, having been first elected at the Barnsley East by-election. Early life and education Ennis was born in Grimethorpe, near Barnsley in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the son of a coal miner and educated at the Hemsworth Grammar School on Station Road before attending the Redland Teachers Training College near Bristol where he was awarded a Bachelor of Education degree in 1975. After leaving education he became a raw materials inspector with J. Lyons and Co. bakery at Carlton, before becoming a teacher in 1976 initially at the Elston Hall Junior School in Fordhouses, Wolverhampton.
