Terry Dear
Alexander George "Terry" Dear (4 October 1913 – 1995) was an Australian radio personality in the "Golden years of Australian AM radio", remembered as the last compere of ''Australia's Amateur Hour''. Known for his affable personality, he made a moderately successful transition to television. History Dear was born in Fitzroy North, Victoria, a son of James Kidd Dear (died 1952) and Annie Dear, née Bryan. He was educated to Intermediate level. He set out as an Engineering student, but was more interested in a career in singing, taking lessons from Amelia Banks. He began his radio career with Melbourne's 3KZ, as compere of a five-hour Saturday night program of dance music, though also claimed by 3AW. During WWII he served in Lae, New Guinea, as announcer and OC with the rank of lieutenant in the Army radio station. In 1946, following his discharge, he was appointed production manager at 3AW. Australia's Amateur Hour
''Australia's Amateur Hour'' was an important early Australian radio and television program in the form of a talent contest, which was broadcast from 1940 to 1958, which also aired briefly on television from 1957 to 1958. The radio version was originally compered by radio producer Harry Dearth, then by Dick Fair, and finally by Terry Dear (1913-1995). It was a popular, long-running program on which many performers appeared. The television version was compered by Terry Dear, and ran from August 1957 to February 1958. It aired on the Nine Network (TCN-9) and the Seven Network (HSV-7). The success of the radio version didn't translate to television, with the television version closing after only seven months, and the radio version shortly thereafter. Robert Neal Dyer OBE (May 22, 1909 – January 9, 1984) was a Gold Logie-award-winning American-born vaudeville entertainer and singer, radio and television personality, and radio and television quiz show host who made his name in Australia. Dyer is best known for the long-running radio and then television quiz show, ''Pick a Box''. At the height of his radio career, Dyer and his friend and rival, Jack Davey, were regarded as Australia's top quiz comperes. Bob and his wife, Dolly, were probably, after Sir Robert and Dame Pattie Menzies, the most recognised double act in Australia in the 1960s. Pymble is a suburb on the Upper North Shore of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia.
