Terrorism, in its broadest sense, is the use of criminal violence to provoke a state of terror or fear, mostly with the intention to achieve political or religious aims. May 2022 Kabul Mosque Bombing
On 25 May 2022, at least 5 people were killed when the Hazrat Zakaria Mosque in Kabul, Afghanistan, was bombed. At least 17 others were injured. The cause of the bombing was an improvised explosive device that had been hidden inside the mosque prior to the bombing. It detonated during the Maghrib prayers. An anonymous Taliban official told reporters that at least fourteen were killed, including the imam. This has not yet been verified. The same day, at least nine were killed in three bombings which targeted minivans in Mazar-i-Sharif, Balkh Province. The United Arab Emirates condemned the attack as a terrorist action. 2022 Kabul Hotel Attack
On 12 December 2022, insurgents attacked a hotel popular with foreigners in Kabul, Afghanistan. At least 3 civilians were killed. 18 others, including foreigners, are reported to be among those injured. Islamic State – Khorasan Province claimed responsibility for the attack. Background The Islamic State–Taliban conflict began in 2015; since then they have often attacked Kabul. In September 2022, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the Russian Embassy in Kabul, killing two Russian diplomats. On November 30, 2022, a bombing of a madrasa in Aybak, Samangan Province, Afghanistan killed 17 people and injured 26 others. The majority of those killed were children. September 2022 Kabul School Bombing
On September 30, 2022, a suicide bomber blew himself up at the Kaaj education center in Dashte Barchi, a Hazara neighborhood in Kabul, Afghanistan, killing at least 52 people according to the Associated Press. The majority of the victims were young female students. Background After the fall of Kabul ended the War in Afghanistan in 2021, the ruling Taliban vowed to protect citizens, including minorities. However, the country has once again witnessed occasional terrorist attacks, especially against minorities. On 23 September 2022 a car bomb exploded outside a mosque in the Wazir Akbar Khan neighbourhood of Kabul, Afghanistan. The explosion happened as worshippers were leaving the building after finishing Friday prayers. Police said that seven people had been killed and 41 injured. No group took responsibility. Bombing Of The Russian Embassy In Kabul
On 5 September 2022, a suicide bombing occurred outside the Embassy of Russia, in Kabul, Afghanistan. Attack The attack was carried out at around 10:50 a.m., when a crowd of people were gathering to apply for visas to travel to Russia. Kabul police said that the terrorist had been shot dead in the attack by security forces, but his bombs exploded after he was killed. The terrorist attack killed at least eight people according to Al Jazeera but RIA Novosti reported that at least ten had died. Two of the dead were embassy employees, including an unnamed security guard and a secretary, Mikhail Shah. Police said that two employees and at least four Afghan civilians were killed. An unclear number of people were injured in the bombing. RIA Novosti reported 15 to 20 wounded. August 2022 Kabul Mosque Bombing
On 17 August 2022, the Abu Bakr al Sadiq Mosque in Kabul, Afghanistan was bombed. Many were reported killed in the explosion. Residents nearby also heard gunshots after the explosion occurred. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, although it was almost surely perpetrated by IS-KP, which has stepped up attacks targeting the Taliban and Afghan civilians since the former insurgents’ takeover of the country in August 2021, as U.S. and NATO troops were in the final stages of their withdrawal. The previous week, IS-KP claimed responsibility for killing a prominent Taliban cleric at his religious center in Kabul. 2022 Mazar-i-Sharif Minivan Bombings
On 25 May 2022, three explosions hit a group of minivans in the Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif, Balkh Province. 9 people were killed and 15 others wounded. Taliban authorities said that the terrorists responsible had placed IEDs inside the vehicles. The bombings are believed to have been directed at Afghan Shia passengers. April 2022 Kabul Mosque Bombing
On 29 April 2022, a bombing occurred at a Sunni mosque in western Kabul, Afghanistan during the early afternoon of 29 April 2022, killing at least 10 people. Background The bombing was the latest in a series of attacks occurring in April 2022, during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Many of the attacks were claimed by the Islamic State and its affiliates, and most of them targeted Shi'a and Sufi civilians. At least 70 people were killed, making it one of the deadliest waves of attacks in the country since the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. The deadliest of the previous attacks was the bombing in Kunduz.
