Terra Nova is a village located southwest of Glovertown on the island of Newfoundland. It was served by the Canadian National Railway in the 1950s. The population in 2006 was 68, this from a historic low of just 28 in 1996. By 2016, the population had risen to 73, down slightly from the total of 83 recorded in 2011. There is a sizable leisure and summer population here seasonally as well as the stable permanent population. This community is a local service district, non tax district. Terra Nova is accessible from Route 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) via Route 301 (Terra Nova Road). Glovertown, Newfoundland And Labrador
Glovertown is a town in northeastern Newfoundland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is in Division No. 7 on Alexander Bay. History Originally, Glovertown was called Bloody Bay. That name dated back to the 18th century and supposedly it referred to a massacre of a family of 11 by Beothuk natives that were living in the area at the time. The town was renamed Alexander Bay in 1894. During 1894, a section of railway was being built in the area. A few years later the town was renamed to Glovertown, its current name, after Sir John Hawley Glover who served as the Governor of Newfoundland from 1876 to 1881 and from 1883 to 1885. The first settlers of Glovertown appeared in the early 19th century. In 1845, 12 people lived there. By 1857 there were only 10 and by 1862 there were only 8. The 2021 Canadian census was a detailed enumeration of the Canadian population with a reference date of May 11, 2021. It follows the 2016 Canadian census, which recorded a population of 35,151,728. The overall response rate was 98%, which is slightly lower than the response rate for the 2016 census. It recorded a population of 36,991,981, a 5.2% increase from 2016. Route 301, also known as Terra Nova Road, is a east–west highway on the island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It serves as the only road connection to the town of Terra Nova, connecting with Route 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) within Terra Nova National Park at the other end. Route 301 is entirely a very rough dirt road, and still has yet to be paved. The route starts off with a sharp right turn followed by sharp left turn, and is a relatively straight road afterwards, with a few slight bends. Area code 709 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the entire Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. History The first telephone system was installed in Newfoundland in 1885, but domestic long-distance calls within the Dominion of Newfoundland could be placed on a limited basis only in 1921. The first long-distance call from Newfoundland to Canada was made on January 10, 1939, by using a shortwave radio link operated by the Canadian Marconi Company in Montréal. Shortwave radio also carried calls from St. John's to London, England.
