Terra Incognita
''Terra incognita'' or ''terra ignota'' (Latin "unknown land"; ''incognita'' is stressed on its second syllable in Latin, but with variation in pronunciation in English) is a term used in cartography for regions that have not been mapped or documented. The expression is believed to be first seen in Ptolemy's ''Geography'' c. 150. The term was reintroduced in the 15th century from the rediscovery of Ptolemy's work during the Age of Discovery. The equivalent on French maps would be ''terres inconnues'' (plural form), and some English maps may show ''Parts Unknown''. Similarly, uncharted or unknown seas would be labeled ''mare incognitum'', Latin for "unknown sea". Details An urban legend claims that cartographers labelled such regions with "Here be dragons". Although cartographers did claim that fantastic beasts (including large serpents) existed in remote corners of the world and depicted such as decoration on their maps, only one known surviving map, the Hunt–Lenox Glo ...

Terra Incognita (Gojira Album)
''Terra Incognita'' is the debut album released by French metal band Gojira. It was recorded and mixed by Stephan Kraemer. According to a text on the album inlay, the title (Latin for " unknown land") refers to the area inside of each man, where, according to Hindu legend, Brahma hid the divinity that he had taken from humanity for the punishment of its abuse. In 2009, the album was re-released in a limited edition digipack including three bonus tracks. The 2009 issues of the album were for a limited time only and was eventually reissued once again 7 years later on 10 October 2016. Prior to these two reissues and the following years after the 2009 reissue, copies of the album were getting hard to find and were often selling at higher prices on auction sites and sought after by fans following long periods of time being out of print. Writing and composition ''Terra Incognita'' was written at the time vocalist Joe Duplantier had deliberately moved away from society to live two ...

Terra Incognita (Juliette Lewis Album)
''Terra Incognita'' is the debut full-length solo album by American singer Juliette Lewis, released in August 2009. Produced by Omar Rodríguez-López of The Mars Volta, it was her first album after parting with backing band the Licks, replaced by the New Romantiques. "‘Terra Incognita’ means unknown territory," she said, "and that’s where I wanted to go musically. The guitars are more wild and atmospheric. The groove is dark and deep and allows for a lot of sonic contrasts." Background "There were a lot of breakups and pain and betrayal going on when I wrote the songs…" Lewis explained. "So that's what's up lyrically. Sound-wise, I just had a vision in my head of something more textured and richer than the straight-ahead rock from before." Of Rodríguez-López, she said, "We're both communicators, so we got along really well. And we had a lot of similar interests: film, art. We recorded at his place in Brooklyn, and also in Mexico." Track listing Reception The albu ...

Translated by the author and his son, the story was published in English in ''The New Yorker'' in May, 1963, and later added to '' A Russian Beauty and Other Stories''. Plot summary Vallière (who is also the narrator), his friend Gregson, and Cook - "reminiscent of a Shakespearean clown" - are escaping from Zonraki, trying to cross the yet unknown country to reach the Gurano Hills. The mission is ill-fated. Vallière is sick and febrile. Cook takes off with the Badonian porters, the supplies, and the collections. Gregson and Vallière decide to move on, but are soon joined again by the contrite Cook who apparently was left behind by the Badonians. The narrator is experiencing hallucinations as the journey winds down to its end. He sees at times in "ambiguous transparency" a wardrobe, a ceiling, wallpaper, an armchair, a ...
