''Battlefield Earth'' (also referred to as ''Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000'') is a 2000 American Science fiction film, science fiction film based on the Battlefield Earth (novel), 1982 novel by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. It was directed by Roger Christian (filmmaker), Roger Christian and stars John Travolta, Barry Pepper, and Forest Whitaker. The film follows a rebellion against the alien Psychlos, who have ruled Earth for 1,000 years. Travolta, a Scientologist, began attempting to adapt ''Battlefield Earth'' in the mid-1990s. He was unable to obtain major studio funding because of concerns regarding the script and its connections to Scientology. In 1998, it was picked up by Independent film, independent production company Franchise Pictures, which specialized in rescuing stars' pet projects. Roger Christian (born 25 February 1944) is an English set decorator, production designer and feature film director. He won an Academy Awards, Academy Award for his work on the original ''Star Wars (film), Star Wars'' and was Oscar-nominated for his work on ''Alien (film), Alien''. Christian directed the second unit on both ''Return of the Jedi'' and ''Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace'' as well as feature films including ''The Sender'' and ''Nostradamus (1994 film), Nostradamus''. He also directed the 2000 film ''Battlefield Earth (film), Battlefield Earth'' which is regarded as one of the List of films considered the worst, worst films ever made. Scientology
Scientology is a set of beliefs and practices invented by American author L. Ron Hubbard, and an associated movement. It has been variously defined as a cult, a business, or a new religious movement. The most recent published census data indicate that there were about 25,000 followers in the United States (in 2008); around 1,800 followers in England (2021); 1,400 in Canada (2021); and about 1,600 in Australia (2016). Hubbard initially developed a set of ideas that he called Dianetics, which he represented as a form of therapy. The United States Bullion Depository, often known as Fort Knox, is a fortified vault building located next to the United States Army post of Fort Knox, Kentucky. It is operated by the United States Department of the Treasury. The vault is used to store a large portion of the United States' gold reserves as well as other precious items belonging to or in custody of the federal government. It currently holds roughly of gold bullion, over half of the Treasury's stored gold. The United States Mint Police protects the depository. The Treasury built the depository in 1936 on land transferred to it from the military. Its purpose was to house gold then stored in New York City and Philadelphia, in keeping with a strategy to move gold reserves away from coastal cities to areas less vulnerable to foreign military attack.
