Teresa Vaill
Teresa Vaill (born November 20, 1962) is a female racewalker from the United States. She was born in Torrington, Connecticut. Vaill set her personal best in the women's 20 km race walk event (1:33:23) on April 1, 2001, at a meet in Manassas, Virginia. She remains an active competitor, winning numerous Masters athletics, masters championships and placing in the 2018 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, USA National Championships (Open Division) as recently as 2018. The women's 20 kilometres race walk at the 2004 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program was held through the streets of Athens with the start and finish at the Athens Olympic Stadium on August 23. The race had started with a strong, good-sized bunch of fifty-seven walkers keeping together through the field. As the group left the stadium falling apart, Russia's Olimpiada Ivanova took the front of the pack on the opening 2k laps, followed by several of the anticipated favorites, which included 2000 Olympic champion Wang Liping, the Australian sisters Jane and Natalie Saville, and the Greek duo Athina Papayianni and Athanasia Tsoumeleka. By the half way mark, fourteen walkers were still in close contention with Ivanova maintaining the lead and Belarus' Ryta Turava staying beside her to shorten the gap. The 5th World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, were held at the Ullevi Stadium, Gothenburg, Sweden on 5–13 August 1995. This edition featured 1804 athletes from 191 nations. This competition saw the women run the 5000 m event at the World Championships for the first time. The women's 10,000 metres walk event at the 1995 Pan American Games was held in Mar del Plata on 21 March. This was the last time that this distance was held at the Pan American Games; being later replaced by 20 kilometres. In hot conditions, the Americans and Mexicans separated from the rest of the field. Martínez was the first to fall off the back. With 800 metres to go, Vaill was disqualified, 200 meters later, Rohl received her second card and she slowed, effectively handing the victory to Mendoza.
