State Route 146 (SR 146) is a relatively short north–south highway in Middle Tennessee. The road begins northwest of Centertown and ends in Smithville. The current length is , shortened by approximately from the original length when U.S. 70S was routed northward along a new four-lane alignment. Route description SR 146 begins in Cannon County at an intersection with U.S. 70S/ SR 1 in the Bluewing community. It proceeds northward as Short Mountain Road, passing through the community of Center Hill, where it intersects SR 281. It continues north through farmland along the southeastern edge of the Highland Rim and turns east, then northeast as it moves around Short Mountain. After passing Short Mountain, SR 146 goes into DeKalb County as Short Mountain Highway, continuing northeast through Bluhmtown. It serves as the southern terminus of SR 83 before entering Smithville. Smithville is a city in DeKalb County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,004 at the 2020 census, up from 3,994 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of DeKalb County. Smithville is home to the Smithville Fiddler's Jamboree, which it has hosted annually since 1972. Geography Smithville is located in central DeKalb County at (35.957191, -85.820756). U.S. Route 70 passes through the town as Broad Street, leading east to Sparta and northwest to Lebanon. Highland Rim
The Highland Rim is a geographic term for the area in Tennessee surrounding the Central Basin. Nashville is largely surrounded by higher terrain in all directions. Geologically, the Central Basin is a dome. The Highland Rim is a cuesta surrounding the basin, and the border where the difference in elevation is sharply pronounced is an escarpment. Nashville is located in the northwestern corner of the basin. Geology and Physiography The Highland Rim is a physiographic section of the larger Interior Low Plateaus province, which in turn is part of the larger Interior Plains physiographic division.
