Tenkiller, Oklahoma
Tenkiller is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 633 at the 2010 census. Geography Tenkiller is located in southeastern Cherokee County. It is bordered to the north by Welling, to the west across the Illinois River by Park Hill and Keys, and to the east by Rocky Mountain in Adair County. The community of Dry Creek is a short distance to the south. Tahlequah, the county seat, is to the northwest via Welling Road. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , of which is land and , or 5.23%, is water. Tenkiller Ferry Lake on the Illinois River occupies the western border of the CDP. Tenkiller Ferry Lake
Tenkiller Ferry Lake, or more simply, "Lake Tenkiller," is a reservoir in eastern Oklahoma formed by the damming of the Illinois River. The earth-fill dam was constructed between 1947 and 1952 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers for purposes of flood control, hydroelectric power generation, water supply and recreation. It went into full operation in 1953.Warner, Badger and Lage. The lake and dam were named for the Tenkiller family, prominent Cherokees who owned the land and ferry that were bought for the project. This is 6th largest lake in Oklahoma, based on water capacity. Geography The lake covers 12,900 acres (52 km²) and has a shoreline of over in the Cookson Hills of the Ozark Mountains of Cherokee and Sequoyah counties, about northeast of the town of Gore and from the intersection of I-40 and the Muskogee Turnpike. ''Terror at Tenkiller'' is a 1986 American slasher film directed and produced by Ken Meyer, and written by Claudia Meyer. The film was shot entirely in Oklahoma near Lake Fort Gibson and the Fort Gibson dam, though not at the actual Tenkiller Ferry Lake as the story suggests. Plot In rural Oklahoma, under the cover of night, a marina worker named Tor murders Denise, a local waitress, by slitting her throat, then dumps her body in Lake Tenkiller. The next day, a pair of co-eds, Leslie and Janna, head to Janna's summer home near Lake Tenkiller for summer break, and to get away from Leslie's abusive fiancé, Josh.
