Tenino Downtown Historic District
The Tenino Downtown Historic District is two blocks long, one-half block-deep on either side of Sussex Street in Tenino, Washington. Approximately three acres in size, the district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 2004. Tenino, Washington
Tenino () is a city in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,870 at the 2020 census. Incorporated in 1906, the city sits upon land first established as a food-source prairie for Native Americans living in the area. The town grew around an economy of stone quarrying, with local sandstone being used in several government and university buildings in the Pacific Northwest. With a decrease in demand for stone, the town converted one abandoned quarry into a community pool. Its downtown district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tenino gained notoriety during the Great Depression for the use of wooden money as public currency for its residents, a practice briefly revived during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Research released in a 2019 book provided an answer regarding myths surrounding the name of Tenino; it was determined the name is borrowed from the moniker of a steamboat used during a railroad committee expedition. Washington State Route 507
State Route 507 (SR 507) is a Washington state highway in Lewis, Thurston and Pierce counties that extends from (I-5) and (US 12) in Centralia to in Spanaway. The highway also intersects in Yelm and in McKenna. The first appearance of the roadway on a map was in 1916 and since, two highways, (SSH 5H) and , were established on the current route of SR 507 in 1937 and 1943. They both became SR 507 during the 1964 highway renumbering. Route description State Route 507 (SR 507) begins at a diamond interchange with (I-5), co-signed as (US 12) in Centralia. Traveling east as Mellen, Alder and West Cherry Streets, the highway crosses railroad tracks owned by BNSF Railway and used by Amtrak's '' Cascades'' and ''Coast Starlight'' routes, both of which serve the Centralia Amtrak station. The roadway later intersects Pearl Street, the only couplet on SR 507, which parallels Tower Avenue through Downtown Centralia. The street ...
