Ten Laps To Go
''Ten Laps to Go'' (''King of the Speedway'') is a 1938 American action/drama film directed by Elmer Clifton. The film stars Rex Lease as a champion race car driver, Duncan Renaldo as his rival, and Muriel Evans as the romantic interest. Former silent film star Marie Prevost has a small role in this film, which would prove to be her last; her death from self-inflicted malnutrition and alcoholism occurred less than six months later. Production notes ''Ten Laps to Go'' was produced by the independent company Fanchon Royer Pictures and was distributed theatrically under the states-rights system. It has been released on television in the US under the title ''King of the Speedway''. Elmer Clifton
Elmer Clifton (March 14, 1890 – October 15, 1949) was an American writer, director and actor from the early silent days. A collaborator of D.W. Griffith, he appeared in ''The Birth of a Nation'' (1915) and ''Intolerance'' (1916) before giving up acting in 1917 to concentrate on work behind the camera, with Griffith and Joseph Henabery as his mentors. His first feature-length solo effort as a director was ''The Flame of Youth'' with Jack Mulhall. Clifton honed his talents during the late 1910s, directing vehicles for Mulhall and Herbert Rawlinson at Universal and then for Dorothy Gish for Famous Players-Lasky. Two of his projects with Gish, '' Nobody Home'' and ''Nugget Nell'', featured performances from pre-stardom Rudolph Valentino. Most of this early output has been lost. He was the first filmmaker to discover the talents of Clara Bow, whom he cast in '' Down to the Sea in Ships'', released on March 4, 1923. ''Go-Get-'Em, Haines'' is a 1936 American mystery film directed by Sam Newfield. It was William Boyd (actor), William Boyd's last non-Hopalong Cassidy role. Plot Ace reporter Steve Haines is on the trail of Edward Baldwin, the former head of a public utilities company that has bankrupted and defrauded its investors out of their life savings. Haines trails Baldwin to an ocean liner where he is planning to flee to Europe. During the voyage Haines is impressed by the company on the ship, including a famous actor and his singing daughter and a gangster. Haines organises a pantomime melodrama to entertain the passengers using his new acquaintances and convinces Baldwin to take a role playing a man who is murdered. Prior to going on the stage the fake revolver is replaced with a real one.
