Ten Gentlemen From West Point
''Ten Gentlemen from West Point'' is a 1942 American Western (genre), Western film directed by Henry Hathaway and starring George Montgomery (actor), George Montgomery, Maureen O'Hara and John Sutton (actor), John Sutton. Its cinematography was nominated for an Academy Award in 1943. George Montgomery replaced John Payne (actor), John Payne who was suffering an emotional upset at the time. The story tell a fictional story of the first class of the United States Military Academy in the early 1800s. Plot In the early 19th century, West Point Military Academy opens despite some doubting its worth - including the officer in charge, Sam Carter. A number of men enlist in the first class, including rich Howard Shelton and Kentucky backwoodsman Joe Dawson. The men are initially antagonistic towards each other, especially when Joe falls for Howard's fiance, Carolyn Brainbridge. The men take part in the war against Tecumseh with William Henry Harrison. Henry Hathaway (March 13, 1898 – February 11, 1985) was an American film director and producer. He is best known as a director of Westerns, especially starring Randolph Scott and John Wayne. He directed Gary Cooper in seven films. Background Born Henri Léopold de Fiennes Hathaway in Sacramento, California, *a "Born March 13, 1898 in Sacramento, California." he was the son of an American actor and stage manager, Rhody Hathaway (1868–1944), and a Hungarian-born Belgian aristocrat, the Marquise Lillie de Fiennes (Budapest, 1876–1938), who acted under the name Jean Hathaway. This branch of the De Fiennes family came to America in the 19th century on behalf of King Leopold I of Belgium and was part of the negotiations with the Belgian Prime Minister, Charles Rogier (1800–1885), to secure the 1862 treaty between Belgium and what was then known as the Sandwich Islands and is now called Hawaii.
