Experimental rock, also called avant-rock, is a subgenre of rock music that pushes the boundaries of common composition and performance technique or which experiments with the basic elements of the genre. Artists aim to liberate and innovate, with some of the genre's distinguishing characteristics being improvisation (music), improvisational performances, avant-garde influences, odd instrumentation, opaque lyrics (or instrumentals), unorthodox structures and rhythms, and an underlying rejection of commercial aspirations. From its inception, rock music was experimental, but it was not until the late 1960s that rock artists began creating extended and complex compositions through advancements in multitrack recording. Caroline Lufkin (born January 9, 1981) is a Japanese-American musician and the younger sister of the Japanese pop singer Olivia Lufkin. Caroline's music been released by Temporary Residence Ltd. Caroline is also a full-time member of Mice Parade (FatCat Records). Biography Originally from Okinawa, Japan, Caroline Lufkin graduated from the Berklee School of Music in Boston in 2003. After graduating, she moved to Tokyo and began working on an album. Before signing with her current label, she had been working on an album in the Japanese music industry where she was being groomed to be a Japanese pop singer. However, she left because of differencing in views on her music stating that "they kept on telling me to change things and I didn't want to change them... Mono (stylised as MONO) is a Japanese instrumental band, formed in 1999 in Tokyo. The band consists of Takaakira "Taka" Goto (electric guitar, glockenspiel), Hideki "Yoda" Suematsu (electric guitar, glockenspiel), Dahm Majuri Cipolla (drums), and Tamaki Kunishi (bass guitar, electric guitar, piano, glockenspiel). Mono have released eleven studio albums. The band spent their early years, from 1999 to 2003, touring Asia, Europe, and America continuously, and released two studio albums, ''Under the Pipal Tree'' (2001) and ''One Step More and You Die'' (2002) on the Tzadik Records and Music Mine Inc. record labels, respectively. Majeure
Majeure is an American space rock and kraut rock outlet for the Pittsburgh based musician Anthony E. Paterra. He has released four studio albums, two collaborations, an EP and a remix EP. As Majeure, Paterra has performed live internationally. Career At the age of 12, Paterra became interested in electronic music after seeing the film '' Dawn of the Dead'', which featured music by Goblin. During his teens, Paterra took up drumming and developed an interest in progressive rock, sci-fi and horror soundtracks. In the early 2000s drummer Paterra formed the band Zombi together with Steve Moore. They released four albums together and toured as support to Isis, Trans Am and The Psychic Paramount. Inventions is an American musical ensemble signed to Temporary Residence Records, consisting of Matthew Cooper of Eluvium and Mark T. Smith of Explosions in the Sky. Inventions formed in 2013 as a side project for both musicians, whose main projects were signed to the same record label. Volker Bertelmann (born 1966) is a German pianist and composer who mainly performs and records under the name Hauschka. He is best known for his compositions for prepared piano. Early life Volker Bertelmann was born in Kreuztal, Germany. He grew up in the village of Ferndorf in the district of Siegen-Wittgenstein, North Rhine-Westphalia. The fifth of six children, he discovered piano playing at the age of nine at church service. He began studying classical piano and continued taking lessons for the next ten years. Bertelmann formed his first rock band when he was fourteen. During the following years he was commissioned to compose music for television and sang in a number of other bands. After leaving school he moved to Cologne, where he began studying medicine and then switched to a course in business economics, but gave up both in order to concentrate on music. Grails (band)
Grails is an American instrumental experimental rock band formed in 1999. Based in Portland, Oregon, the group have released seven studio albums, on labels including Southern and Temporary Residence, and have toured across North America and Europe. History Grails was formed under the name "Laurel Canyon" in 1999 by guitarist Alex Hall, drummer Emil Amos (also of Holy Sons and Om) and second guitarist Paul Spitz. They garnered positive reactions following their first show, played on a whim. Portland musicians Timothy Horner (violin) and Bill Slater (piano/bass) later joined the group to record their first EP. Stuart Hyatt is an American musician and multimedia artist. Biography Early life Stuart Hyatt was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 18, 1974. Between the ages of 3 to 10, Hyatt was trained in playing the violin according to the Suzuki method. At age 10, when the violin instructor started to introduce reading sheet music, Hyatt lost interest in further lessons. Hyatt attended the Broad Ripple High School for the Arts and Humanities, located in Indianapolis. A fellow student at the school lent a 4-track cassette recorder to Hyatt, whereupon Hyatt started recording music in layers and experimenting with sound. Education Hyatt studied Visual Arts at Eckerd College in St. Petersberg, Florida, where he graduated in 1997. He then obtained a master's degree in Fine Arts at Indiana University. Explosions In The Sky
Explosions in the Sky is an American post-rock band from Texas. The quartet originally played under the name Breaker Morant, then changed to the current name in 1999. The band has garnered popularity beyond the post-rock scene for their elaborately developed guitar work, narratively styled instrumentals—what they refer to as "cathartic mini-symphonies"—and their enthusiastic and emotional live shows. They primarily play with three electric guitars and a drum kit, although band member Michael James will at times exchange his electric guitar for a bass guitar. Envy (band)
Envy is a Japanese screamo band formed in Tokyo, in 1992. They are signed to Rock Action Records in Europe and Temporary Residence Limited in North America, though originally they worked with Level Plane Records. Initially influential in the post-hardcore and screamo scenes, Envy soon began to employ elements of post-rock in their work as well. They have released 7 studio albums to date (with the most recent being The Fallen Crimson), as well as several EPs and splits, most notably with Jesu and American post-hardcore band Thursday. Original member and vocalist Tetsuya Fukagawa left Envy in 2016. On February 6, 2018, Envy announced a new lineup consisting of Tsuyoshi Yoshitake, Yoshimitsu Taki, and Hiroki Watanabe.
