Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine are areas of Ukraine that are currently ''de facto'' controlled by the Russian government in the course of the Russo-Ukrainian war. In Ukrainian law, they are defined as the "temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine" ( ua, Тимчасово окупована територія України, translit=Tymchasovo okupovana terytoriia Ukrainy). Ukrainian law made no distinction between Russian and "pro-Russian" administrations before the Russian government claimed to "annex" them in September 2022. The occupation started in 2014 following the Russian invasion and annexation of the Crimean peninsula, along with the mostly unrecognized Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics capturing parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts during the War in Donbas. The Russian occupation of Sumy Oblast was a military occupation that began on 24 February 2022, when Russian forces invaded Ukraine and began capturing parts of the Sumy Oblast.
