Temotu Province
Temotu (or Te Motu, literally "the island" in Polynesian) is the easternmost province of Solomon Islands. The province was formerly known as Santa Cruz Islands Province. It consists, essentially, of two chains of islands which run parallel to each other from the northwest to the southeast. Its area is . Provinces Of Solomon Islands
Solomon Islands is divided into nine provinces. The national capital, Honiara, on the island of Guadalcanal, is separately governed as the country's Honiara, Capital Territory. History Under the British Solomon Islands, British Solomon Islands Protectorate, there were initially 12 administrative districts: Choiseul, Eastern Solomons, Gizo, Guadalcanal, Lord Howe, Malaita, Nggela and Savo, Rennell and Bellona Islands, Santa Cruz, Shortlands, Sikaiana (Stewart), and Ysabel and Cape Marsh. The administrative centre was in Tulagi. Lomlom
Lomlom is the largest of the Reef Islands in the Solomon Islands. It is located in Temotu Province, measuring seven by four kilometres and separated from Fenualoa by a deep channel. The estimated terrain elevation above sea level is some 21 metres. Variant forms of the island's name are Fonofono and Lom lom. Teanu (island)
Teanu (or ''Tevai'') is the second island in size of the Vanikoro group, in the Temotu Province of the Solomon Islands. It is located northeast of the main island of the group, Banie. Population Teanu has currently only one inhabited village, Puma. Teanu has given its name to Teanu, the main language of Vanikoro. The latter is sometimes known also as ''Puma''. Tinakula
Tinakula is a conical stratovolcano which forms an island north of Nendo Island, Nendo in Temotu Province, Solomon Islands. It lies at the north end of the Santa Cruz Islands. It is about wide and rises above sea level, rising from the sea floor. The volcano was first recorded in eruption in 1595 when Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira, Álvaro de Mendaña sailed past it. History and occupation The island is uninhabited. A population was eradicated when the volcano erupted around 1840 and pyroclastic flows swept all sides of the island. In 1951, polynesians from Nukapu and Nupani settled on the island, which reached a peak population of 130, before it had to be evacuated with the 1971 eruption. The village of ''Temateneni'' was on the southeast coast. In the late 1980s, two families (fewer than 10 people) from Nupani made another attempt at settlement. Nendö Island
Nendö is the largest of the Santa Cruz Islands, located in the Temotu province of Solomon Islands. The island is also known as Santa Cruz, Nendo, Ndeni, Nitendi or Ndende. The name ''Santa Cruz'' was given to the island in 1595 by the Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña, who started a colony there. Historically, the island has also been called called New Guernsey and Lord Egmont's Island, after John Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont, First Lord of the Admiralty. Pileni
300px, Map of the Reef Islands Pileni is a culturally important island in the Reef Islands, in the northern part of the Solomon Islands province of Temotu. Despite its location in Melanesia, the population of the islands is Polynesian. Pileni has a population of below 300 inhabitants and is around wide and long. It is vulnerable to tsunamis and the sea level rising. History The first church in Pileni was set up in the 1930s. The island was hit by cyclones in the 1950s, 1985 and 1993, and a tsunami struck the island in 1990. An extension school was set up on the island in 2002, the classroom of which is the island's only permanent building. From 2000, there has been a reported shortage of fish and shellfish, and some fruit trees have died. Economy Per household, the average monthly income is between SI$51 and SI$200. Nukapu
Nukapu is one of the islands of the nation of Solomon Islands. It is in the Reef Islands group in Temotu Province; the easternmost province of the Solomons. The estimated terrain elevation above sea level is 15 metres. The island contains a memorial to Bishop John Patteson who was murdered on Nukapu in 1871. Population As of 2009, the local population was 100 people. The language spoken on Nukapu is Pileni, a member of the Polynesian language family. Pileni is also spoken on the islands of Pileni, Nupani, Nifiloli, Aua and Matema Island of the Reef Islands, as well as in the Taumako Islands (also known as the Duff Islands), some 200 miles to the east.
