Erasmus of Formia, also known as Saint Elmo (died c. 303), was a Christianity, Christian saint and Christian martyrs, martyr. He is venerated as the patron saint of sailors and abdominal pain. Erasmus or Elmo is also one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, saintly figures of Christian tradition who are venerated especially as Intercession, intercessors. Documentation of his life The ''Acts of Saint Elmo'' were partly compiled from legends that confuse him with a Syrian bishop Erasmus of Antioch. Isla San Telmo
Isla San Telmo is located in the southeast area of the Pearl Islands in Panama. It is the first landsighting when sailing to the port of Panama. The Reserva Natural Isla San Telmo was established in 1996 as a protection measure for the island; marine turtles are noted on the beaches, endemic birds and animals are found in the premontane forest, and the island waters are a whale breeding area. Geography Isla San Telmo is a small island measuring in area. The island is located on the triangle shaped Bay of Panama, facing the Pacific Ocean to its west. The smallest of the many volcanic islands in the Archipelago de las Perlas to the southeast of the main island, it is heavily forested and was once a coastal valley. ''San Telmo'' ("Saint Peter González" or "Saint Erasmus of Formia") was a Spanish 74-gun ship of the line, launched in 1788. It sank while bringing reinforcements to Peru during the war of independence, and some of its crew or passengers may have discovered and landed on Antarctica. History In 1819, the ''San Telmo'', commanded by Captain Joaquín de Toledo y Parra, was the flagship of a Spanish naval squadron under Brigadier Rosendo Porlier y Asteguieta bound for Callao, Peru, to reinforce colonial forces there fighting the independence movements in Spanish America. It was damaged by severe weather in the Drake Passage, south of Cape Horn on 2 September 1819. Legacy A portion of the 644 officers, soldiers and seamen of the ''San Telmo'' may have been the first people to land on Antarctica. San Telmo Museoa (English: San Telmo Museum, or STM) is a museum of the Basque society located in Donostia-San Sebastián, addressing old and contemporary Basque culture, arts and history in a European, global context.
