Telegraph, Texas
Telegraph is a ghost town on State Highway 377, 13 miles (20 km) southwest of Junction, in Kimble County, Texas, United States. History Biographer Robert A. Caro notes, "the town had no telegraph; it had been given its name because telegraph poles had been cut from trees near there during the 1850s." Ruth Holmes was appointed the first postmaster, when Telegraph was assigned a post office on February 17, 1900. By the 1890, ranches were established in the surrounding area of the Texas Hill Country. During the 1920s, camping on the river near Telegraph was a popular vacation spot for campers, hunters, and fishermen, with the only building of the town serving as the residence/country store/post office (which closed in 2009). In 1925, Telegraph had rental cabins on the river, and a gas station-post office-general store (residence of the postmaster). Geographic Names Information System
The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. It is a type of gazetteer. It was developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to promote the standardization of feature names. Data were collected in two phases. Although a third phase was considered, which would have handled name changes where local usages differed from maps, it was never begun. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) is a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission for historically and architecturally significant properties in the U.S. state of Texas. RTHL is a legal designation and the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. Because it is a legal designation, owners of RTHL-designated structures must give 60 days' notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. Changes that are unsympathetic may result in removal of the designation and historical marker. More than 3,600 RTHL structures are spread throughout the state. Humid Subtropical Climate
A humid subtropical climate is a zone of climate characterized by hot and humid summers, and cool to mild winters. These climates normally lie on the southeast side of all continents (except Antarctica), generally between latitudes 25° and 40° and are located poleward from adjacent tropical climates. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. Coke Stevenson
Coke Robert Stevenson (March 20, 1888 – June 28, 1975) was an American politician who served as the 35th governor of Texas from 1941 to 1947. He was the first Texan politician to hold its three highest offices (Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, lieutenant governor, and governor), as well as the only one to do so in the 20th Century. In 1966, Recorded Texas Historic Landmark marker number 5118, honoring Stevenson, was placed on the Kimble County Courthouse grounds in Junction, Texas. Early life Stevenson was born in a log cabin in Mason County, to Robert Milton and Virginia Hurley Stevenson. Although some works submit that Stevenson was named after former Texas Governor Richard Coke, he was in fact named after Methodist Bishop Thomas Coke. Junction, Texas
Junction is a city in and the seat of Kimble County, Texas, United States. Its population was 2,574 at the 2010 census. Geography Junction is located at (30.489772, –99.771335), about northwest of San Antonio and west of Austin in central Kimble County. Interstate 10 runs through the northern and eastern parts of the city, with access from Exits 456 and 457. I-10 leads southeast to Kerrville and beyond to San Antonio, and west to Sonora. U.S. Route 83 follows I-10 past Junction, leading north to Menard and south to Uvalde. U.S. Route 377 passes through the center of Junction as Main Street and 11th Street. To the northeast, U.S. 377 leads to Mason, and to the southwest it leads to Rocksprings.
