A telephone company, also known as a telco, telephone service provider, or telecommunications operator, is a kind of communications service provider (CSP), more precisely a telecommunications service provider (TSP), that provides telecommunications services such as telephony and data communications access. Many telephone companies were at one time government agencies or privately owned but state-regulated monopolies. The government agencies are often referred to, primarily in Europe, as PTTs (postal, telegraph and telephone services). Telephone companies are common carriers, and in the United States are also called local exchange carriers. With the advent of mobile telephony, telephone companies now include wireless carriers, or mobile network operators. Telcom is an Irish telecommunications company operating in the business-to-business market. They offer communications services, are a ComReg registered carrier for voice and data and operate as an independent Internet Service Provider. Telcom is a registered member of the Internet Neutral Exchange (INEX). History Telcom was founded in 1999 in Dublin by Liam Tully. It initially provided phone systems for offices, before expanding to include data and internet services. In 2015 Telcom invested €1 million into new network infrastructure, creating a 10Gb core network. This allowed them to expand their business fibre broadband service, offering speeds of up to 1 Gb/s to customers with zero contention rates. High Com The idea of a compander for consumer devices was based on studies of a fixed two-band compander by Jürgen Wermuth of AEG-Telefunken ELA, Wolfenbüttel, developer of the Telefunken (formally abbreviated as "TEL" in professional broadcasting) four-band audio compander for professional use. In April 1974, the resulting "RUSW-200" prototype first led to the development of a sliding two-band compander by Ernst F. Schröder of Telefunken Grundlagenlaboratorium, Hannover since July 1974.
