Tehachapi (; Kawaiisu: ''Tihachipia'', meaning "hard climb") is a city in Kern County, California, United States, in the Tehachapi Mountains, at an elevation of , between the San Joaquin Valley and the Mojave Desert. Tehachapi High School is the single comprehensive high school serving students in grades 9–12 in the Tehachapi, California area. Tehachapi High School is part of the Tehachapi Unified School District, a K-12 school district. Tehachapi High School has a current enrollment of 1,500-plus, with district enrollment of approximately 4,900. THS has the reputation of being one of the preferred educational programs in Kern County, with test scores higher than many other high schools in the county, and highly honored athletics and activity programs. The high school was founded circa 1928. Classes were held in a home originally built by Russell Peery in the 1890s in Cummings Valley. The house was dismantled and moved to Tehachapi where it served as the high school until the original high school buildings could be completed. Tehachapi Municipal Airport (KTSP)
Tehachapi Municipal Airport is in Tehachapi, Kern County, California. It covers and has one runway. The airport was established in 1929 originally to support an air mail route between Tehachapi and Bakersfield. After the 1952 Kern County earthquake Tehachapi became inaccessible by roads or rail, and the airport saw an emergency relief airlift for several weeks. There are hangars and an industrial park on the south side of the airport, and in 2009 the city was planning an expansion to include a taxiway and hangars on the north side. In 1974 Golden West Airlines scheduled de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otters to Los Angeles (LAX). The flight is in the August 1974 OAG but not in the March 1975 edition. Tehachapi Pass (Kawaiisu: ''Tihachipia'', meaning "hard climb") is a mountain pass crossing the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, California. Traditionally, the pass marks the northeast end of the Tehachapis and the south end of the Sierra Nevada range. The route is a principal connector between the San Joaquin Valley and the Mojave Desert. The Native American Kitanemuk people used the pass as a trade route before the American settlement of the region in the 19th century. The main line of the former Southern Pacific Railroad opened though the pass in 1876; the tracks are now owned by the Union Pacific Railroad and shared with BNSF Railway. U.S. Route 466 was built in the 1930s, and the road is now State Route 58. The Pass is also the route of the planned California High-Speed Rail line. Tehachapi Loop
The Tehachapi Loop is a long spiral, or helix, on the Union Pacific Railroad Mojave Subdivision through Tehachapi Pass, of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, south-central California. The line connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Mojave Desert. Rising at a steady two-percent grade, the track gains in elevation and makes a diameter circle. Any train that is at least 3,800 feet (1,162 m) (approx. 56 60’(67'11") box cars) long passes over itself going around the loop. At the bottom of the loop, the track passes through Tunnel 9, the ninth tunnel built as the railroad was extended from Bakersfield. The line averages about 36 freight trains each day; passenger services such as Amtrak's ''San Joaquin (Amtrak), San Joaquin'' are banned from using the loop, while the ''Coast Starlight'' can only use it as a detour. The Tehachapi Energy Storage Project (TSP) is a 8 MW/32MWh lithium-ion battery-based grid energy storage system at the Monolith Substation of Southern California Edison (SCE) in Tehachapi, California, sufficient to power between 1,600 and 2,400 homes for four hours. At the time of commissioning in 2014, it was the largest lithium-ion battery system operating in North America and one of the largest in the world. TSP is considered to be a modern-day energy storage pioneer with significant accomplishments that have proven the viability of utility-scale energy storage using lithium-ion technology. The Kawaiisu (pronounced: ″ka-wai-ah-soo″) are a Native Californian ethnic group in the United States who live in the Tehachapi Valley and to the north across the Tehachapi Pass in the southern Sierra Nevada, toward Lake Isabella and Walker Pass. Historically, the Kawaiisu also traveled eastward on food-gathering trips to areas in the northern Mojave Desert, to the north and northeast of the Antelope Valley, Searles Valley, as far east as the Panamint Valley, the Panamint Mountains, and the western edge of Death Valley.
