Charles Tegart
Sir Charles Augustus Tegart (5 October 1881 – 6 April 1946) was an Irish-born police officer who served in British India and Palestine. Tegart was the mastermind behind the creation of the Arab Investigation Centres in Palestine during the Great Arab revolt. During his career, Tegart achieved a reputation of being "uncompromising with detainees". Early life Born in Derry on 5 October 1881, Tegart was the son of a Church of Ireland clergyman, Rev. Joseph Poulter Tegart of Dunboyne, County Meath and his wife Georgina Johnston. He was educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen and briefly at Trinity College, Dublin. Career in India He joined the Calcutta Police in 1901, becoming head of its Detective Department. He served almost continuously in Calcutta for a period of thirty years until he was appointed a member of the Secretary of State's Indian Council in December 1931. Tegart Fort
A Tegart fort is a type of militarized police fort constructed throughout Palestine during the British Mandatory period, initiated as a measure against the 1936–1939 Arab Revolt. Etymology The forts are named after their designer, British police officer and engineer Sir Charles Tegart. In Israel, the name is often pronounced "Taggart". This is probably due to the transliteration of the name to Hebrew and then back to Latin alphabet, along with the translator's wrong assumption that the most common way of writing this anglicised Scottish surname has to be applied ("Taggart" is far more widespread than "Tegart"). History Mandate Palestine Sir Charles Tegart designed the forts in 1938 based on his experiences in the Indian insurgency. William John McGregor "Greg" Tegart is a former senior Australian public servant. He is currently an adjunct professor at Victoria University. Early life Greg Tegart was born on 27 March 1929. He was educated at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, University of Melbourne and University of Sheffield. Career Tegart first joined the Australian Public Service in 1947 as Laboratory Assistant and Technical Officer with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. He was appointed Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology in 1981. Tegart retired from the public service in 1993.
