Ted Wilson Trail
The Ted Wilson trail is a 12 kilometre walking and cycling path in north west of Geelong, Victoria (Australia). The path trails along the Western ring road through the suburbs of Corio, Lovely Banks, Bell Post Hill and Hamlyn Heights. It was named in honour of Ted Wilson (former police sergeant and manager of the Bicycle Co-ordination Unit) for his contribution to cycling through the Barwon Regional Bicycle Council and the City of Greater Geelong’s bicycle strategy. Cycling Geelong run an annual memorial ride for Ted Wilson on the trail, providing a sprig of rosemary to participants. In 2014, the City of Greater Geelong started The Greenway Project which committed to planting over 60,000 trees and 20,000 shrubs and grasses by 2018 along the trail. Corio, Victoria
Corio is a residential and industrial area, which forms one of the largest suburbs of Geelong, Victoria in Australia. It is located approximately 9 km north of the Geelong central business district. The area was formerly known as Cowie's Creek after James Cowie, an early land owner who was active in the local and state government. History Explorers Hume and Hovell reached Corio and reported that the local Aboriginals referred to the area as 'coraiyo', meaning either 'small marsupial' or 'sandy cliffs'. Land in the area was first subdivided and sold in 1852 as "Cowie's Creek", named after an early local businessman, James Cowie. By the 1860s, Cowie's Creek was home to two hotels and a population of approximately 500 people. A post office opened on 16 November 1864, and was renamed as Corio Post Office in 1913. Lovely Banks, Victoria
Lovely Banks is a northern suburb of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Once an agricultural and rural area, the suburb is quickly developing into a residential area adjoining the Geelong suburbs of Bell Park, Corio and Norlane. At the 2016 census Lovely Banks had a population of 2,301. The origin of the name is thought to be descriptive of the area. The land to the west rises quite quickly from 30 to 100 metres above sea level. It provides an expansive view of Geelong and Corio Bay. The Post Office, opened around 1902 named as Lovely Banks Reservoir, was renamed Lovely Banks around 1907 and closed in 1960. Hamlyn Heights is a residential suburb of Geelong. It located to the west of the city on hills that overlook Corio Bay. It was named after Sidney Hamlyn, a local resident in the 1940s. At the , Hamlyn Heights had a population of 6,293. The suburb boundaries are Church St, Ballarat Rd, Moorabool River and two unmarked boundaries extending between Church St to Moorabool River and between Moorabool River and Ballarat Rd. Cycling In Geelong
Cycling in Geelong, Victoria is common for recreation and competition, but less so for utility and commuting. Geelong has a discontinuous network of off-road trails and on-road bicycle lanes. Geelong's major shared riding and walking trails are the Bellarine Rail Trail, Barwon river, Bay, Ted Wilson and Waurn Ponds creek trails. A series of rider fatalities and the safety of bike riding in and around Geelong has received media and political attention.
