Ted Coubray
Edwin "Ted" Coubray (19 October 1900 – 10 December 1997) was a New Zealand projectionist, filmmaker and inventor. He was born in Eastern Bush, Southland, New Zealand, and died in Homebush, Sydney. He retired to Australia in 1973 after Auckland Cinemas, for which he was working, closed the Tudor Cinema in Remuera. Hei Tiki
''Hei Tiki'', also known as ''Primitive Passions'' and ''Hei Tiki: A Saga of the Maoris'', is a 1935 American mock documentary film made in New Zealand by the eccentric Alexander Markey and released (with sound added) in America. The film gained notoriety in America for having scenes of nudity in film, nudity cut in various states. Markey directed and produced the film, also writing the screenplay and the "native melodies". His girlfriend Zoe Varney was credited as associate producer. Alfred Hill (composer), Alfred Hill, the original composer, and Ted Coubray, the original cameraman, were both fired and not credited; Coubray also lost his camera to Markey. The film also used unpaid Māori people, Māori extras, and taonga, their cherished tribal artefacts, were lent by the cast; Markey took the artefacts when he returned to America, leaving unpaid bills behind him. ''Rewi's Last Stand'' is the title of two feature films directed by pioneering New Zealand filmmaker Rudall Hayward: a 1925 silent movie, and 1940 remake with sound. They are historical dramas, based on the last stand of Rewi Maniapoto at the Battle of Ōrākau. Hayward believed that New Zealand's history offered material as dramatic as any Hollywood western. Alexander Markey
Alexander Markey (1891–1958) was an American filmmaker and founder of Markey Films. He was born in Hungary and died in Switzerland. From 1928 to 1935 he was in New Zealand making films about the Māori people. In 1928 he was sent by Carle Laemmle of Universal Studios to make a film he called ''Taranga'', but did not keep to schedule or make any effective footage. So the film was made as Under the Southern Cross by Lew Collins. Two years later and described as "somewhat eccentric" Markey then returned for the making of '' Hei Tiki''; originally a silent film, which was released in 1935 with music and voice-over added in America. The film was shot in Waihi. When shooting was finished Markey left for America with “the film footage, many of the artifacts he had borrowed from Māori, a great many unpaid bills, and his partner Zoe Varney”. ''The Romance of Maoriland'' was a 1930 New Zealand film, intended to be New Zealand's first "talkie" film with Ted Coubray’s Coubraytone sound system, though also having intertitles. The film was registered with the Chief Censor on 14 August 1930, but was never released. Producer, director and script writer Edward T. Southland Region
Southland ( mi, Murihiku) is New Zealand's southernmost region. It consists mainly of the southwestern portion of the South Island and Stewart Island/Rakiura. It includes Southland District, Gore District and the city of Invercargill. The region covers over 3.1 million hectares and spans over 3,400 km of coast. History The earliest inhabitants of Murihiku (meaning "the last joint of the tail") were Māori of the Waitaha iwi, followed later by Kāti Māmoe and Kāi Tahu. Waitaha sailed on the Uruao waka, whose captain Rakaihautū named sites and carved out lakes throughout the area. The Takitimu Mountains were formed by the overturned Kāi Tahu waka Tākitimu. ''The Adventures of Algy'' is a 1925 Australian film comedy from director Beaumont Smith about a " silly ass" Englishman (Claude Dampier) who inherits a sheep station in New Zealand. It is an unofficial follow up to ''Hullo Marmaduke'' (1924), which also starred Dampier. Unlike most of Smith's silent films, most of the movie survives today. Plot Algy (Claude Dampier) is an Englishman who travels to New Zealand to claim a sheep station he has inherited. He falls in love with a neighbour, Kiwi McHill ( Bathie Stuart), then travels to Australia. He runs into Kiwi again, using dances she has learned from her Māori friends in a Sydney revue.
