''Tecumseh'' is a 1972 East German western film directed by Hans Kratzert and starring Gojko Mitić, Annekathrin Bürger and Rolf Römer. The film depicts the life of the Native American leader Tecumseh (1768–1813), including his role in Tecumseh's War and his later death in the War of 1812 while fighting with the British against the United States. Hans Kratzert
Hans Kratzert (3 February 1940 – 15 August 2023) was a German screenwriter and film director. Kratzert was born in Heerwegen in the Province of Silesia during the Second World War. He was part of the mass emigration of Germans westward following Nazi Germany's defeat during the war. Kratzert's family settled in the Soviet-occupied territory that became East Germany, where he grew up. After military service, Kratzert began working at DEFA, the state-owned East German film company. After making his directorial debut in 1968, Kratzert went on to direct a further thirteen films up to 1989. He made a number of family films, and in 1972 directed the Red Western ''Tecumseh'' (1972), a biopic of the Native American leader of the same name. The fall of the Berlin Wall and the closure of DEFA effectively ended his career as a film director. Kratzert died on 15 August 2023, at the age of 83. Herbert Köfer (17 February 1921 – 24 July 2021) was a German actor, voice artist, and television presenter. He was the first German TV news presenter for the East German Deutscher Fernsehfunk, and also presented the station's last news before the reunification of Germany. His first theatre engagement was in 1940, and he kept acting until the age of 100. Köfer played an SS-Hauptsturmführer in the 1963 film '' Nackt unter Wölfen'' (''Naked Among Wolves''). He was known for detective series such as ''Polizeiruf 110'' and for comic roles. He founded his own troupe, ''Köfers Komödiantenbühne'', in 2003, and published memoirs.
