Teatro Ideal
''Teatro Ideal'', also known as La Plaza Theater (Spanish: ''Teatro de La Plaza''), is a historic theater and performing arts venue located in the main town square (''plaza pública'') of Yauco Pueblo, the administrative and historic center of the municipality of Yauco, Puerto Rico. The theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Background The theater, originally built in 1926 as a movie theater for the ''Yauco Moving Picture Company'', is a two-storey Broadway-type eclectic-style structure with monumental Tuscan columns with Roman amphora crowns that support the rainbow arch and roof which extends over the structure's façade. Although originally intended as a movie theater the venue soon became more popular in the 1920s and 1930s for zarzuelas, operettas and concerts by international musical artists such as by Argentine singer and composer Carlos Gardel. Yauco, Puerto Rico
Yauco () is a town and municipality in southern Puerto Rico. Although the downtown is inland, the municipality stretches to a southern coast facing the Caribbean Sea. Yauco is located south of Maricao, Lares and Adjuntas; east of Sabana Grande and Guánica; and west of Guayanilla. The municipality consists of 20 barrios and Yauco Pueblo (the downtown and administrative center of the municipality). It is both a principal town of the Yauco Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Ponce-Yauco-Coamo Combined Statistical Area. It was founded by Fernando Pacheco on February 29, 1756, and developed for commodity crops of tobacco, sugar cane, and coffee. Yauco became a center for Corsican immigration to Puerto Rico in the 19th century due to its geographical similarity to their homeland. Corsicans have contributed to many areas of life in Yauco, particularly to its coffee industry. Francisco Villaespesa Martín (14 October 1877–9April 1936) was a Spanish writer. He was born in Láujar de Andarax, Province of Almería, which marked him all his life. He is probably the most notable writer of the province, thus, both the capital and his hometowns libraries have his name.
