Teatro Ideal
''Teatro Ideal'', also known as La Plaza Theater (Spanish: ''Teatro de La Plaza''), is a historic theater and performing arts venue located in the main town square (''plaza pública'') of Yauco Pueblo, the administrative and historic center of the municipality of Yauco, Puerto Rico. The theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Background The theater, originally built in 1926 as a movie theater for the ''Yauco Moving Picture Company'', is a two-storey Broadway-type eclectic-style structure with monumental Tuscan columns with Roman amphora crowns that support the rainbow arch and roof which extends over the structure's façade. Although originally intended as a movie theater the venue soon became more popular in the 1920s and 1930s for zarzuelas, operettas and concerts by international musical artists such as by Argentine singer and composer Carlos Gardel. Yauco () is a Yauco barrio-pueblo, town and Municipalities of Puerto Rico, municipality in southern Puerto Rico. Although the Yauco barrio-pueblo, downtown is inland, the municipality stretches to a southern coast facing the Caribbean Sea. Francisco Villaespesa Martín (14 October 1877–9April 1936) was a Spanish writer. He was born in Láujar de Andarax, Province of Almería, which marked him all his life. He is probably the most notable writer of the province, thus, both the capital and his hometowns libraries have his name. Evaristo Ribera Chevremont
Evaristo Ribera Chevremont (February 16, 1890 in San Juan – March 1, 1976) was a poet from Puerto Rico. Although several of his published books deal with Puerto Rican nationality and regionalism, many of his verses excel in a universal lyrical character, as can be read in books such as El Caos de Los Sueños and El Hondero Lanzó la Piedra, among others. Literary Styles Ribera Chevremont is considered to be one of the great poets of the Antilles and mid-twentieth century critics such as Federico de Onís and Concha Meléndez even considered him one of the most important poets of the Spanish language. Ribera Chevremont traveled to Spain several times and established friendly ties with some writers' circles. Luis Lloréns Torres
Luis Llorens Torres (May 14, 1876 – June 16, 1944), was a Puerto Rican poet, playwright, and politician. He was an advocate for the independence of Puerto Rico. Early years Llorens Torres was born in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico. His parents, Luis Aurelio del Carmen Llorens and Marcelina Soledad de Torres, were the wealthy owners of a coffee plantation. In Collores (a barrio of Juana Diaz), Llorens Torres was always in contact with nature, which accounts for the love that he felt for nature and country. He always stated that he was proud to come from Collores barrio. His poem made the barrio one of the most well-known of the island of Puerto Rico. Luis Muñoz Rivera
Luis Muñoz Rivera (July 17, 1859 – November 15, 1916) was a Puerto Rican poet, journalist and politician. He was a major figure in the struggle for political autonomy of Puerto Rico in union with Spain. In 1887, Muñoz Rivera became part of the leadership of a newly formed Autonomist Party. In 1889, he successfully ran a campaign for the position of delegate in the district of Caguas. Subsequently, Muñoz Rivera was a member of a group organized by the party to discuss proposals of autonomy with Práxedes Mateo Sagasta, who would grant Puerto Rico an autonomous government following his election. He served as Chief of the Cabinet of this government. On August 13, 1898, the Treaty of Paris transferred possession of Puerto Rico from Spain to the United States and a military government was established.
