Taylors Island is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Dorchester County, Maryland, United States, in the state's Eastern Shore region. The population was 173 at the 2010 census. It is known for hunting, crabbing and fishing. Ridgeton Farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Bethlehem Methodist Episcopal Church and Grace Episcopal Church Complex were listed in 1979. Geography Taylors Island is in western Dorchester County on the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay. It is separated from the mainland on the east by Slaughter Creek. Maryland Route 16 leads northeast from Taylors Island to Cambridge, the Dorchester County seat. Taylor Island
Taylor Island, also known as Taylor's Island, is the largest in a group of seven islands located between the Eyre Peninsula mainland and Thistle Island in the mouth of Spencer Gulf, South Australia. It was named by British explorer Matthew Flinders in 1802, after the loss of William Taylor, a midshipman and master's mate to John Thistle (after whom Thistle Island is named). The remaining islands in the group are also named after lost members of Flinders' expedition: Little Island, Lewis Island, Smith Island, Hopkins Island and Grindal Island. Taylor's Island has been used principally for the grazing of sheep while its surrounding waters are well regarded fishing grounds. Ridgeton Farm
Ridgeton Farm is a historic home located at Taylor's Island, Dorchester County, Maryland, United States. It is an Italianate style, two story home built about 1857-1860 by the local architect Fred Ridgeton, who was quite unknown in the region. The house features a hip roof with a center gable, a widow's walk, and two huge interior chimneys. The property also includes a complex of 19th century barn and sheds. Crab fisheries are fisheries which capture or farm crabs. True crabs make up 20% of all crustaceans caught and farmed worldwide, with about 1.4 million tonnes being consumed annually. Maryland Route 16 (MD 16) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The state highway runs from Taylors Island east to the Delaware state line in Hickman, where the highway continues as Delaware Route 16 (DE 16). MD 16 connects Cambridge with several communities in northern Dorchester County and southwestern Caroline County, including East New Market and Preston. The state highway runs concurrently with U.S. Route 50 (US 50) near Cambridge, MD 331 between East New Market and Preston, and both MD 404 and MD 313 near Andersontown.
