Taylor McWilliams
Taylor McWilliams (born October 1980) is an American real estate developer and part-time DJ, who owns most of London's Brixton Market. McWilliams is originally from Texas, and by 2014, was based in Earls Court/Fulham, London. In 2018, McWilliams acquired Brixton market against competition from Mike Ashley (businessman), Mike Ashley and Aidan Brooks. McWilliams is a part-time DJ, part of the Housekeeping quartet along with Carl Waxberg, Sebastian Macdonald-Hall and Jacobi Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe. In July 2020, McWilliams's company, Hondo Enterprises evicted Nour Cash & Carry from Brixton Market after more than 20 years there, leading to local protests and the founding of the Save Nour group. On 3 November 2020, Hondo Enterprises won planning permission for the development of a 20-storey office block in Brixton, next to a conservation area and Electric Avenue. Brixton Market
Brixton Market comprises a street market in the centre of Brixton, south London, and the adjacent covered market areas in nearby arcades Reliance Arcade, Market Row and Granville Arcade (recently rebranded as 'Brixton Village'). The market sells a wide range of foods and goods but is best known for its African and Caribbean produce, which reflect the diverse community of Brixton and surrounding areas of Lambeth. The Street Market is managed by the London Borough of Lambeth. The covered arcades have always been in private ownership, although substantial public funding was provided for their refurbishment under the Brixton Challenge grant scheme. Michael James Wallace Ashley (born 9 September 1964) is a British billionaire retail entrepreneur focused in the sporting goods market, and the chief executive of Frasers Group Plc (formerly Sports Direct International). He entered the department store industry following the acquisition of House of Fraser post-administration in 2018. He was formerly the owner of Newcastle United football club, having bought it for £135 million in 2007 until selling the club in October 2021. Electric Avenue
Electric Avenue is a street in Brixton, London. Built in the 1880s, it was the first market street to be lit by electric lights (The first street to be lit by an incandescent lightbulb was Mosley Street, in Newcastle upon Tyne). Today, Electric Avenue contains various food and domestic provisions retailers, and hosts a part of Brixton Market which specialises in selling a mix of African, Caribbean, South American and Asian products. It is located just around the corner from Brixton Underground station (1972). The street originally had elegant cast iron Victorian canopies over the pavements which were removed and destroyed in the 1980s.
