Butler is the county seat of Taylor County, Georgia, United States. Its population was 1,972 at the 2010 census. Geography Butler is located at (32.557, -84.239). The city is located along U.S. Route 19, which is the main route through the city. U.S. 19 leads north 28 mi (45 km) to Thomaston and south 24 mi (39 km) to Ellaville. The Fall Line Freeway (GA-540) runs from west to east through the southern part of the city, concurrent with Georgia State Route 96. GA-540 and GA-96 lead east 9 mi (14 km) to Reynolds and west 14 mi (23 km) to Junction City. Georgia State Route 137 also runs through the city, leading northeast 20 mi (32 km) to Roberta and southwest 25 mi (40 km) to Buena Vista. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and 0.31% is water. Taylor County is a county located in the west central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,906. The county seat and largest city is Butler. History Taylor County was created on January 15, 1852, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly from portions of Macon, Marion and Talbot counties. The County is named for Zachary Taylor, twelfth President of the United States. Taylor County is also widely known for its history of racism and Jim Crow era subjugation of its African-American populace, which continued long into the 20th century. An especially egregious case is the 1946 lynching of Maceo Snipes, a World War II veteran and the first African-American to vote in Taylor County, for which he was murdered by the KKK on his doorstep in the hours following. Reynolds is a town in Taylor County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,086 at the 2010 census. Geography Reynolds is located in eastern Taylor County at 32.559167 N, -84.095556 W (32° 33′ 33″ N, 84° 5′ 44″ W). The town is located in the eastern part of Taylor County along the Fall Line Freeway and Georgia State Route 96, which run from west to east through the center of town. Via GA-540 and GA-96, Fort Valley is 13 mi (21 km) east, and Butler, the Taylor County seat, is 10 mi (16 km) west.
