Taunton Bus Station
Taunton bus station was situated on Tower Street, Taunton, Somerset, England. It was opened by the Western National Omnibus Company in 1953 and closed in 2020, by which time it was operated by The Buses of Somerset. In 2015 the Transport Trust awarded the station a Red Wheel plaque for its historic value. Background The National Omnibus and Transport Company started a service from Taunton to Burnham-on-Sea on 21 July 1920. The following year it began to operate town services in Taunton when the town's single tram line closed due to increases in the cost of electricity. National's operations in Somerset were transferred to the new Western National Omnibus Company (WNOC) when it was set up in 1929. Taunton
Taunton () is the county town of Somerset, England, with a 2011 population of 69,570. Its thousand-year history includes a 10th-century monastic foundation, Taunton Castle, which later became a priory. The Normans built a castle owned by the Bishops of Winchester. Parts of the inner ward house were turned into the Museum of Somerset and Somerset Military Museum. For the Second Cornish uprising of 1497, Perkin Warbeck brought an army of 6,000; most surrendered to Henry VII on 4 October 1497. On 20 June 1685 the Duke of Monmouth crowned himself King of England here in a rebellion, defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor. Judge Jeffreys led the Bloody Assizes in the Castle's Great Hall. The Grand Western Canal reached Taunton in 1839 and the Bristol and Exeter Railway in 1842. South West Coaches
South West Coaches is a privately owned bus company that operates services around Dorset, Somerset, and Wiltshire, in South West England. History Reggie Wake started bus services from South Barrow in February 1930. Business expanded during World war II and the main base was moved to nearby Sparkford. A trunk route from Yeovil to Castle Cary and Shepton Mallet was started in 1947 and operated by double-decker buses from 1949 until 1968. Several other operators were taken over which led to setting up a second depot in Wincanton. In 1964 it became a limited company, Wakes Services Limited. By 1979 some of the smaller services had been withdrawn but the Yeovil-Shepton mallet service continued. At this time 4 buses and 21 coaches were in use. Bus deregulation in the 1980s encouraged further growth of the network to places such as Taunton, Frome and Bridport in Doreset. In 1996 the fleet had 35 vehicles. History Rexquote, a transport engineering business in Bishops Lydeard, operated a fleet of old buses under the name of ''Rexquote Heritage''. As well as private hire, some regular circular tourist routes were advertised. One such was between Weston-super-Mare, Sand Bay and nearby tourist attractions in the summer of 2000. Somerset West And Taunton District Council
Somerset West and Taunton is a local government district in Somerset, England. It was established on 1 April 2019 by the Somerset West and Taunton (Local Government Changes) Order 2018. The council replaced the Taunton Deane and West Somerset councils, which governed the same area from 1974. On 1 April 2023, the district will itself be abolished and replaced by a new unitary district for the area at present served by Somerset County Council. The new council will be known as Somerset Council, covering Somerset district. Background In September 2016, West Somerset and Taunton Deane councils agreed in principle to merge the districts into a single one, subject to consultation. Camborne ( kw, Kammbronn) is a town in Cornwall, England. The population at the 2011 Census was 20,845. The northern edge of the parish includes a section of the South West Coast Path, Hell's Mouth and Deadman's Cove.
