Tauberbischofsheim Altarpiece
The ''Tauberischofsheim Altarpiece'' (earlier known as the ''Karlsruhe altarpiece'' or ''Karlsruhe panels''; German: ''Tauberbischofsheimer Altar'', ''Karlsruher Altar'', and ''Karlsruher Tafeln'', respectively) is a late work by the Germany, German Northern Renaissance, Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald, probably completed between 1523 and 1525. The earliest written references to the work come from the 18th century, when the altarpiece was still in the Church of St. Martin in Tauberbischofsheim. Its original location and the identity of the patron who commissioned it are not known, but it is assumed that they both were in Tauberbischofsheim. The panels, which today are displayed separately, were originally painted on either side of a 196 cm by 152 cm wooden panel. Whether the pieces were the central part of a polyptych is uncertain, however. In order to display the work in an art museum, the panel was split in half during its first restoration in 1883. Bernd Moeller
Bernd Moeller (May 19, 1931 in Berlin – October 29, 2020) was a German Protestant theologian and church historian. Bernd Moeller studied Protestant theology as well as history. In 1956 he received his doctorate from the Protestant theological department of the University of Mainz with the dissertation ''Die Anfechtung bei Johann Tauler'' (Religious scruples in the work of Johann Tauler). Two years later his habilitation followed on ''Johannes Zwick und die Reformation in Konstanz'' (John Zwick and the Reformation in Constance) at the University of Heidelberg. In 1964 he succeeded Ernst Wolf as the chair of church history with an emphasis on Reformation history at the University of Göttingen, and he taught there until his retirement in 1999 . He was succeeded in turn by Thomas Kaufmann. Moeller is a specialist in general church history and the urban history in the late medieval and the Reformation era. Kurt Martin (31 January 1899 in Zurich – 27 January 1975 in Bad Wiessee) was a German art historian. Martin was a professor of art history. His career began in 1927 as curator of the . From 1934 to 1956, he was director of the Staatlichen Kunsthalle Karlsruhe (National Art Gallery Karlsruhe). In 1940 he was appointed Head of the Municipal Museums of Strasbourg as well as Chief Commissioner of the Alsatian Museums. In 1956 he became Director of the Karlsruher Kunstakademie (Academy of Art Karlsruhe), and in 1957 General Director of the Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Painting Collection). Charles-Marie-Georges Huysmans (, ; 5 February 1848 – 12 May 1907) was a French novelist and art critic who published his works as Joris-Karl Huysmans (, variably abbreviated as J. K. or J.-K.).
