Tarrawingee Tramway
The Tarrawingee Tramway was a railway in the Barrier Ranges region of New South Wales. History On 9 June 1891, the Tarrawingee Flux & Tramway Company, led by J. S. Reid, opened a 40 mile line to carry high-grade limestone from Tarrawingee (for use as flux) to the Broken Hill smelters. It purchased two James Martin & Co built 2-6-0 locomotives to the same specification as the South Australian Railways Y class. However they were sold to railway builder Baxter & Sadler and the Silverton Tramway Company (STC) and instead hired in locomotives from the STC. In 1897, the smelting of iron-ore had moved to Port Pirie and the need for Tarrawingee limestone ceased. After being lobbied, on 7 September 1899 the New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) purchased the line for £15,000 and spend £37,000 upgrading the line. Sulphide Street Railway Station
Sulphide Street railway station was the terminus of the Silverton Tramway in New South Wales, Australia. It served the city of Broken Hill. History Sulphide Street station opened on 2 January 1889 as the terminus of the Silverton Tramway from Cockburn. In 1905, a new station building was built. From 1891 until 1929 Sulphide Street was also served by the Tarrawingee Tramway. The station closed on 9 January 1970 when the Silverton Tramway was replaced with the standard gauge line extended to South Australia via Broken Hill station. The station reopened in the late 1970s as a museum. South Australian Railways Y Class
The South Australian Railways Y class was a class of narrow gauge steam locomotives operated by the South Australian Railways. History The Y class were numerically the largest class of steam locomotive operated by the South Australian Railways (SAR). With a ''Mogul'' (2-6-0) wheel arrangement widely used in Australia at the time, 129 were built between 1885 and 1898. Beyer, Peacock & Co, Manchester built 50, James Martin & Co of Gawler 77, and the SAR's Islington Railway Workshops 2. They operated across the SAR's narrow gauge network. Between 1904 and 1924, 48 were fitted with new Belpaire boilers and reclassified as the Yx class. Vacuum Oil Company was an American oil company known for its ''Gargoyle'' 600-W steam cylinder motor oil. After being taken over by the original Standard Oil Company and then becoming independent again, in 1931 Vacuum Oil merged with the Standard Oil Company of New York to form Socony-Vacuum, later renamed to Mobil and eventually merging with Standard Oil of New Jersey (itself renamed to Exxon) to form ExxonMobil in 1999. History Vacuum Oil was founded in 1866 by Matthew Ewing and Hiram Bond Everest, of Rochester, New York. Lubrication oil was an accidental discovery while attempting to distil kerosene. Consolidated Zinc was an Australian mining company from 1905 to 1962. History The company's initial operations focused on extracting zinc from mine tailings of the Broken Hill Ore Deposit at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. The company was founded in Melbourne on 9 September 1905 as the Zinc Corporation Limited, to exploit residual zinc concentrations with an estimated value of $12 million in the 6 million tons of mine tailings deposited from mining activities over the previous 20 years. The New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) was the agency of the Government of New South Wales that administered rail transport in New South Wales, Australia, between 1855 and 1932. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, represents the wheel arrangement of two leading wheels on one axle, usually in a leading truck, six powered and coupled driving wheels on three axles and no trailing wheels. Tarrawingee, New South Wales
Tarrawingee is a locality and a ghost town in the Far West region of New South Wales, some north of the town of Broken Hill. The town was established in 1889 to exploit a deposit of limestone needed as flux for the smelters at Broken Hill. The township grew to accommodate 400 people and facilities included a post office, two pubs, a police station, a court house and a school. In 1898, smelting moved to Port Pirie and the limestone quarry closed. Today only the stone foundations of a few buildings remain. Between 1890 and 1930, Tarrawingee was the terminus of the Tarrawingee Tramway. Used at first to cart limestone back to Broken Hill, it was later used as a stepping off point for coaches heading to places such as Tibooburra and Milparinka. The line closed permanently in 1932 and the lines were removed in 1936. The town had a Hotel, Police Station and a school. James Martin & Co
James Martin & Co was an Australian engineering company which progressed from making agricultural equipment to making railway locomotives. History James Martin & Co. was founded in Gawler, South Australia in around 1848 by James Martin as a blacksmith and wheelright business. It soon began to manufacture reapers. The opening of the Gawler railway line in 1857 allowed Adelaide to be accessed more easily. In 1858, Thomas Flett Loutit joined the business as a shareholder and steam power was introduced to the workshop. In 1868 Loutit retired due to ill health.
