Tarnya Smith
Tarnya Lisa Smith (born 17 March 1965) is an Australian politician. She was a Liberal National member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 2012 to 2017, representing the electorate of Mount Ommaney. Smith, who had been the candidate for the federal seat of Oxley at the 2010 state election, was elected to the Legislative Assembly at the 2012 state election, defeating new Labor candidate Ben Marczyk. She narrowly retained Mount Ommaney following the 2015 election. The narrow defeat of the Newman Government relegated the LNP to opposition and Smith was promoted to Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs by Lawrence Springborg. Her elevation to Shadow Minister for Science, Innovation and the Digital Economy came with the election of Tim Nicholls as Opposition Leader on 6 May 2015. Tim Nicholls
Timothy James Nicholls (born 6 April 1965) is an Australian politician and a former leader of the Liberal National Party of Queensland. He served as the Treasurer of Queensland and the Minister for Trade of that state between March/April 2012 and 14 February 2015. He is the member for Clayfield in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. He was originally a member of the Liberal Party including a stint as its deputy leader, but joined the Liberal National Party in 2008 when the Liberal Party and the National Parties merged in Queensland. Education Nicholls was educated at Trinity Grammar School in Melbourne and the Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane. He completed a Bachelor of Laws at Queensland University of Technology. 2017 Queensland State Election
The 2017 Queensland state election was held on 25 November 2017 to elect all 93 members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, the unicameral Parliament of Queensland. The first-term incumbent Labor government, led by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, won a second term in government. They were challenged by the Liberal National opposition, led by Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls and minor parties One Nation, Katter's Australian Party and the Greens. The 2015 Queensland state election was held on 31 January 2015 to elect all 89 members of the unicameral Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The centre-right Liberal National Party (LNP), led by Premier Campbell Newman, attempted to win a second term but was defeated by the opposition centre-left Australian Labor Party (ALP), led by Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk. Labor formed a minority government with the support of the lone independent MP in the chamber, Peter Wellington. The 2012 Queensland state election was held on 24 March 2012 to elect all 89 members of the Legislative Assembly, a unicameral parliament. The Labor Party (ALP), led by Premier Anna Bligh, was defeated by the opposition Liberal National Party (LNP), led by Campbell Newman. It is only the sixth time that Queenslanders have ousted a sitting government since 1915. The ALP was attempting to win a ninth consecutive election victory, having won every general election since 1989, despite being out of office between 1996 and 1998. The 2010 Australian federal election was held on Saturday, 21 August 2010 to elect members of the 43rd Parliament of Australia. Queensland Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s).
