Tar (song)
"Tar" is the debut single by the British pop group Visage, released in 1979. Background "Tar" was the band's sole release on Radar Records in November 1979, before they signed to Polydor Records the following year. The song's lyrics are centred on the habit of smoking cigarettes. As Steve Strange put it in his autobiography, the song is about "the pleasure and pain of nicotine". The B-side to the single is "Frequency 7", a rapid synthesizer composition with vocoder vocals. (An extended, instrumental "Dance Mix" of the song was released on the " Mind of a Toy" single in 1981. Both versions were re-released by the band in 2013). "Tar" was not a chart hit, and Radar's distribution deal collapsed shortly after the single was released. A newer version of the song appeared on Visage's eponymous debut album released in 1980. Visage (band)
Visage were a British synthpop band, formed in London in 1978. The band became closely linked to the burgeoning New Romantic fashion movement of the early 1980s, and are best known for their hit " Fade to Grey" which was released in late 1980. In the UK, the band achieved two Top 20 albums ('' Visage'' and '' The Anvil'') and five Top 30 singles before the commercial failure of their third album (''Beat Boy'') led to their break-up in 1985. The band has seen various line-up changes over the years, all fronted by vocalist Steve Strange, who resurrected the band name in the 2000s. In 2013, the most recent line-up of the band released ''Hearts and Knives'', the first new Visage album in 29 years. The band's fifth and final album, ''Demons to Diamonds'', was released in 2015, nine months after Strange had died following a heart attack. Radar is a detection system that uses radio waves to determine the distance (''ranging''), angle, and radial velocity of objects relative to the site. It can be used to detect aircraft, ships, spacecraft, guided missiles, motor vehicles, weather formations, and terrain. Peter Ashworth
Peter Ashworth is an English photographer. Ashworth initially specialized in music photography, between 1979 and 2000. In the 1980s, he worked with many UK artists including The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, Soft Cell, Jimmy Page and The Associates. He has also performed as a musician with various bands, including Marc and the Mambas (with Marc Almond), The Gadgets, and The The. In 1980, Ashworth—using his ''Triash'' pseudonym—was briefly a member of the band The The with Matt Johnson. In 1982–1983, he played drums as a member of Marc and the Mambas. "Mind of a Toy" is the third single by the British pop group Visage, released on Polydor Records in March 1981. It was taken from the band's eponymous debut album, following up their international hit " Fade to Grey". Music video The music video for the single was directed by former 10cc members Godley & Creme, who had branched out into video production by that time. The theme of the video was Steve Strange's idea, who decided on a Little Lord Fauntleroy look. In his autobiography, ''Blitzed!'', Strange claimed that the video was banned by the BBC's ''Top of the Pops'' as it was considered to be "frightening for children", however it was actually screened on the show on 19 March 1981.
