Tanju Okan
Tanju Okan (August 27, 1938 – May 23, 1996) was a Turkish singer. Life He was born in İzmir on 27 August 1938. He received his primary and secondary education in Manisa and Balıkesir. Afterwards, he went to Italy for vocal training. In 1961, he began singing professionally in Ankara and then in İstanbul. He married twice and was the father of a son. During the 1990s, he retired and began living in Urla, a small seaside town of the İzmir Province. He died from cirrhosis on May 23, 1996. Career In the early 1960s, he was a solo singer in the Müfit Kiper orchestra. In 1964, he represented Turkey in the Balkan Music Festival, together with Tülay German and Erol Büyükburç. In the same year, he produced his first 45 rpm record. He had a powerful sound and could easily sing three styles of music popular in the 1960s in Turkey: new compositions, covers of Western music and arranged Turkish folklore music (türkü). Tülay German
Tülay German (born 1935, also known as Toulaï in France) is a Turkish female singer, currently living in France. She is known for her modern interpretations of Turkish folk music. Early years Tülay German was born in Istanbul in 1935; she was the only child of her father, a civil servant, and her mother, a housewife. She began singing Turkish classical music at the age of four and during her primary school years performed Franz Schubert's '' Ständchen'' (aka ''Serenade'') and '' Abends unter der Linde'' on radio. Belkıs Aran, a well-known soprano of that time, secretly took the young Tülay to a German music teacher, who declared her an exceptional vocal talent. Nilüfer Yumlu (born 31 May 1955), commonly known as Nilüfer, is a Turkish pop singer. In 1992, one of her biggest hits, "Show Yapma", was included in the album ''Yine Yeni Yeniden''. Ayten Alpman (10 October 1929 – 20 April 2012) was a Turkish jazz and pop singer who gained fame in the 1970s with the song "''Memleketim''" ("My Country") during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation. Biography Born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1929, Alpman worked as a soloist for Istanbul Radio after finishing high school. She began her singing career during the 1950s and was encouraged by Turkish producer Arif Mardin to sing jazz songs in the first years of her career. Modern Folk Üçlüsü ("Modern Folklore Trio") is a Turkish music trio. As the name implies, their main source is Turkish folklore songs (Türkü). Early years The group was founded in July 1969 by Doğan Canku, Ahmet Kurtaran and Selami Karaibrahimgil. In the same year they accompanied Esin Afşar in her song ''Bebek''. In 1970, they began to produce their own records. In 1971 September two members of the group got married and they temporarily put a halt to their activities. Beginning by the end of 1972 however they resumed their activities. Their new LP of 1973 included arranged form of Turkish art music and an example of Western music as well as their conventional genre. Auntie is a song released by Philips Records in 1972 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the BBC. It is named after the affectionate nickname for the corporation, and featured artists from six countries. The singers are Hildegard Knef, Enrico Macias, Sandra & Andres, Alice Babs, Demis Roussos and Vicky Leandros. The composer is Dutch musician Hans van Hemert. Erol Büyükburç
Erol Büyükburç (8 August 1936 – 12 March 2015) was a Turkish singer-songwriter, pop music composer, and actor. Early years and family life Büyükburç was born on 8 August 1936 in Adana. After primary school in his hometown and commerce-high school in Istanbul, he briefly studied economy the Istanbul University. However, he abandoned the higher education after choosing a music career. From his relationship with Türkan Türker, he had two daughters; Ajlan (born in 1970) and Jeyan (born in 1977). Ajlan, a talented singer, died at age 28 in a car accident on 22 July 1999. Büyükburç was hospitalized into the intensive care unit with heart problems after learning about the death of his daughter, whom he loved very much.
