Tania Di Mario
Tania Di Mario (born 4 May 1979) is an Italian female water polo forward, who won the gold medal with the Women's National Team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, and the silver at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She was also part of the Italian team at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. Di Mario is one of four female players who competed in water polo at four Olympics. She was the top goalscorer at the 2004 Olympics, with 14 goals. She ranks first on the all-time scoring list in Olympic history, with 47 goals. Biography Di Mario was born in Rome. She started her sport career as a swimmer, moving to water polo aged 15. After playing for Vis Nova Roma, in 1997-1998 she moved to Orizzonte Catania for which, , she is still playing. With Catania she won a total of fifteen Italian national titles, five European Champions Cups and one European Super Cup. The women's water polo tournament at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, organised by the FINA, was held in Kazan, Russia from 26 July to 7 August 2015. FINA Water Polo World League
The FINA Water Polo World League was an international water polo league organized by FINA, which plays annually, typically from winter through to June. League play featured continental tournaments for men and women, from which the top teams emerged to play in the championship tournament (the "Super Final") where the league champion team is crowned. Men's league play began in 2002, to capitalize on increased worldwide popularity of water polo created by the 2000 Olympic Games, especially in Europe, North America and Australia. The women’s league was added in 2004, based on growing interest in women's play. In October 2022, FINA announced that the tournament would be replaced with the FINA Water Polo World Cup and FINA Women's Water Polo World Cup from 2023 on. The 2016 Women's European Water Polo Championship was held from 10 to 22 January 2016 in Belgrade, Serbia. Hungary won their third title by defeating the Netherlands 9–7 in the final. Italy captured the bronze medal after a 10–9 win over Spain. Qualification Format The twelve teams were split into two groups of six teams. 2012 Women's European Water Polo Championship
The 2012 Women's European Water Polo Championship took place at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, from January 18 to 28, 2012. Italy won their fifth title by defeating Greece 13-10 in the final. Hungary captured the bronze medal after a 9-8 win over Russia. Road to the 2012 Olympics The championships was part of the qualification procedure for the 2012 London Olympics that will take place in late July and early August of that year.
