Tan Seng Poh
Tan Seng Poh (1830 - 13 December 1879), was a chairman of the Singapore Municipal Committee, a Justice of the Peace and an honorary magistrate. Biography Tan was born in 1830 in Ipoh, as the son of Tan Ah Hun, the Kapitan Cina of Perak. When he was nine, his sister married wealthy merchant Seah Eu Chin, and he followed them to the Colony of Singapore, becoming the right-hand man of Seah. He was in good terms with Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor, and gained the patent right to sell Opium in Johor. Through the opium trade, he managed to make a fortune. When Seah retired in 1864, Tan took over Seah's business. In 1865, he succeeded in raising $500 for scholarships for European and Eurasian scholars. On 31 July 1869, Tan and Lee Cheng Tee launched a new gunpowder magazine in Tanah Merah. In 1871, Tan was appointed the chairman of the Singapore Municipal Committee, and was the first Chinese to serve in the committee. The Municipal Commission of Singapore was a body created in 1887 by the British colonial government to replace the Municipal Committee that was created in June 1848. The role of the commission was to manage key services for the Town of Singapore, such as utilities, water services and urban planning. Four Mansions ( zh, c=四大厝, p=Sì dà cuò) were four elaborate Chinese-style mansions built by four Teochew people, Teochew businessmen in the late 19th century in Singapore. Tanah Merah, Singapore
Tanah Merah ( ta, தானா மேரா), is a geographical region located along the south-eastern coast of the East Region of Singapore. Although its boundaries are not exactly clear, it is widely accepted that the term refers to the southern coast of present-day Bedok, Tampines, Changi and Changi Bay. Etymology The name "Tanah Merah" appears in the seventeenth century (1604) map by Manuel Godinho de Erédia on Singapore, written as ''Tana Mera''. This place name is likely to have been an important reference point for the ''orang laut'' (sea people) in their activities in the region. The Malay name for this area is derived from the red lateritic cliffs along the coast that were visible from the sea, hence the name ''Tanah Merah'' or "red land". The earliest written reference comes from James Horsburgh's 1806 chart of "Singapore and Malacca", which has the name "Red Cliffs".
