Tan Eng Chye
Tan Eng Chye () is a Singaporean college administrator who has been serving as the third president of the National University of Singapore since 2018. Prior to his presidency, he served as Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and a provost at the National University of Singapore. Education Tan attended Raffles Institution between 1974 and 1979 before graduating from the National University of Singapore in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) degree in mathematics. He later went on to obtain his PhD from Yale University in 1989, under the guidance of Roger Howe. Career He joined NUS as a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics in 1985, as a Senior Tutor, eventually becoming the Department's Deputy Head in 1999. Invariant theory is a branch of abstract algebra dealing with actions of groups on algebraic varieties, such as vector spaces, from the point of view of their effect on functions. Yale-NUS College is a liberal arts college in Singapore. Established in 2011 as a collaboration between Yale University and the National University of Singapore, it was the first liberal arts college in Singapore and one of the first few in Asia. Singapore Mathematical Olympiad
The Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO) is a mathematics competition organised by the Singapore Mathematical Society. It comprises three sections, Junior, Senior and Open, each of which is open to all pre-university students studying in Singapore who meet the age requirements for the particular section. The competition is held annually, and the first round of each section is usually held in late May or early June. The second round is usually held in late June or early July. In group theory, restriction forms a representation of a subgroup using a known representation of the whole group. Restriction is a fundamental construction in representation theory of groups. Often the restricted representation is simpler to understand. Rules for decomposing the restriction of an irreducible representation into irreducible representations of the subgroup are called branching rules, and have important applications in physics. For example, in case of explicit symmetry breaking, the symmetry group of the problem is reduced from the whole group to one of its subgroups.
