Tan Aik Huang
Tan Aik Huang (, born 14 February 1946) is a retired Malaysian badminton player noted for his footwork and patience. He is the elder brother of Tan Aik Mong. Career In 1966 he won men's singles at the All England Open Badminton Championships, then considered the unofficial World Badminton Championships, defeating Japan's Masao Akiyama in the finals. This came during a run of four straight appearances in the All England finals from 1965 through 1968. He lost hard-fought matches to Erland Kops in '65 and '67 and to Rudy Hartono in '68. Tan was a member of four Malaysian Thomas Cup (men's international) teams including its world champion team of 1967. He won numerous major international singles titles during the mid- and late 1960s including the Danish Open, the US Open, the Canadian Open, and the Malaysian Open. Straits Settlements
The Straits Settlements were a group of British territories located in Southeast Asia. Headquartered in Singapore for more than a century, it was originally established in 1826 as part of the territories controlled by the British East India Company, the Straits Settlements came under British Raj control in 1858 and then under direct British control as a Crown colony on 1 April 1867. In 1946, following the end of the Second World War and the Japanese occupation, the colony was dissolved as part of Britain's reorganisation of its Southeast Asian dependencies in the area. The Straits Settlements originally consisted of the four individual settlements of Penang, Malacca, Dinding and most importantly Singapore—its capital and was nicknamed the "Gibraltar of the East". Punch Gunalan
Datuk Punch Gunalan (4 February 1944 – 15 August 2012) was a Malaysian badminton player, who achieved success in both singles and doubles competitions. Badminton career Gunalan was a talented right-hander who spent what might have been some of the best years of his playing career competing only sporadically as a student in England. In early 70s, Gunalan and his partner, Ng Boon Bee became the leading men's doubles team in the world. They captured gold at the biennial Asian Games (1970), at the quadrennial Commonwealth Games (1970), and at the Asian Championships (1969). They captured the venerable All England title in 1971. Though perhaps less consistent in singles than he was in doubles, Gunalan was capable of playing it at the highest level. Sangob Rattanusorn
Sangob Rattanusorn (born 1943) is a former badminton player from Thailand who won numerous titles and represented his country in team play from the early 1960s through the early 1970s. Career A fine "all-arounder" (proficient in all three events: singles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles), Rattanusorn won eight Thai national singles titles between 1962 and 1970, and the Southeast Asian Peninsular singles title in 1967. Outside of Asia, his most significant victories came in doubles events. He shared the U.S. Open mixed doubles title with England's Margaret Barrand in 1963, and the Canadian Open mixed doubles title with the USA's Lois Alston in 1968. In 1968 he also won the Canadian Open and Dutch Open men's doubles titles, and reached the men's doubles semifinal at the All-England Championships with fellow countryman Chavalert Chumkum.
